I am restoring an 1909 lunch. I have a Lockwood� two cylinder that I was planning to use. It is completely rebuilt and ready to put in the boat. Now I find out now that I cannot run it on many of the lakes in California. I am looking for a small two cylinder four cycle about 5 to 8 hp that I can purchase or trade for.email [email protected]. I would like to finish this boat before I die. Right now it's neck and neck. |

David, sorry to hear you can't run your L-A, I can imagine what the water and air would be like if you ran it 3 or 4 times a year, I guess there's no grandfather clauses out there. A friend in Wisconsin has a 5HP Buffalo twin, we ran it at Portland when he bought it, I believe it's available. This motor is a lot heavier than your L-A, how big is your boat? I have a reversing prop and mechanism to fit the engine. Richard Durgee may have specs on the engine, if not I think Bob Price would. |

just a thought, who would know it was a two cycle anyway? but I looked up the regs and here it is:

Two-stroke engines are not "banned" for use on all waterways in California, nor is there any plan to do so.
Carbureted and electronic-injection two-stroke engines are considered high-emission engines. Generally, these engines were manufactured prior to 1999.
A carbureted two-stroke engine can emit up to 25-30 percent of its fuel unburned into the water or atmosphere, which is why high-emission engines are prohibited on some lakes.
There are no salt-water or river restrictions in California on high-emission two-stroke engines, excluding personal watercraft (vessels such as Jet Skis) bans in some areas. For example, San Francisco has prohibited personal watercraft within 1200 feet of its shoreline. See "Local Restrictions" on our Web page for a list of lakes.
Direct injection two-stroke engines, made since 1999, are considered clean emission engines and can be used on every water body in California, with some exceptions not related to emission limits.
A new direct injection two-stroke engine will normally have a label sticker (with 1 to 3 stars) on its engine cover indicating that it meets California Air Resources Board emission regulations for 2001, 2004, and 2008 for vessel engine manufacturers. |

Thank you, . One of the members of old marine engines website indicated that he was not allowed to run his two cycle boat motor on Lake Tahoe during antique boat show. So I Contacted Lake Tahoe and they indicated that I would have to bring the boat in for inspection before it would be permitted on the lake. They indicated that I need to check with the larger lakes of California also concerning their regulations. |

Maybe they would be more forgiving if you ran it with a dry exhaust system.

Jim that is a good idea. Would that cause the boat motor to be noisier? If I'm not able to find a four cycle Engine I'll pursue that. I'm learning a lot from this project. Mostly that an inexpensive boat, is not! |

David,
You can put a muffler on it and simply route the water discharge overboard instead of thru the muffler. Look for a tractor, car, or motorcycle muffler of your liking and adapt it to your engine.

Greetings all,
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) along with the states of Nevada and California have made ALL 2 STROKE ENGINES ILLEGAL!
The ONLY exemption to this is with direct oil injection on modern motors.
I run the ACBS show at Tahoe Keys and am a judge and author at that show and the TYC Concours d'elegance. I have tried for show exemptions and early engine exemptions with no luck.
We are just praying that they will not succeed in going after all carbureted internal combustion engines as well. It is on their list. As it is on the CARB (California Air Resources Board) agenda. A CARB representative was recorded at a public meeting to say that if it has a carb, it needs to be crushed. Did not matter if it was a 1905 Rolls Royce or a 70 Chevy. The boat engines are also on the list. That said, they have a very very long uphill road and battle to make that happen.

Lew, Thank you This is what I was told too. Well back tor my search for a 4 cycle marine engine. So I am back looking for someone
who wants to sell a 4 cycle 5 to 8 HP |
