That is a Gray Model S. Very nice, I haven't seen one with a magneto. |

Kjell,
I am not sure about the L&F, but probably just a foundry marking. The 11 in your S/N should be the year.
Mine has a threaded flange bolted to the engine for the exaust. the inlet should have a check valve and carburetor.

That's a great find, you even have a reversible propeller. Do you have a picture of the boat it came out of?

I don't have any photos, sorry for that but I was tog excited I suppose to think clearly. But it looked like this smaller one. It's 5 meters but the other was about 8.  |

Fantastic find, congratulations. Do you have any photos of the original boat we could see?
The boat you show, was it built as a sailboat or a powerboat? I don't see any sign of a shaft or propeller or stuffing box. It almost looks like someone added to the keel to make her a sailboat?
Is the magneto mount part of the cylinder casting or added later do you think?
Used in fresh water or was there a closed cooling system?
Original paint on the engine? If so, might be a good idea to keep it and just wipe with linseed oil to restore the colour. |

No photos but perhaps is there something left of it. Someone added about two inches to the keel, it should have been about one. This is a norwegian boat about a hundred years old. The other was swedish but built the same way. This is built for rowing -two pairs- and an small engine. Bigger boats often had all three types. Fresh water. Original paint as far as I understand. I must take a closer look at the magneto but it looks very "original".  |

Nice to see that you have managed to find one of the most complete gray engines.
It even has the small spring chain to couple the oiler and the crankshaft - still in one piece.
The engine was just in the time period of transition from gas to gas/oil mix.
It appears that you even have the glass sight tube fr the oiler .
But please, if you do restore it and run it - use a 25:1 gas / oil mix
Some of Richard D's Grays of the same era have gib keys instead of a nut holding the flywheel to the crankshaft.
I think your crankshaft probably has couterweights to help make it run smoother.
Is your engine seized or is it free to turn?

The Gray is in very good condition, everything works and I belive it would start if I tried. I love the sound of an old one- cylinder ! For the moment I'm trying to date the American Bosch magneto. |

Cute little motor; what is it? Had a chain-drive starter or is that a power-take-off of some kind?
The lubricator on the Gray is a "Detroit" I believe. I have some literature on them if of interest to others here. |

It,s a swedish Meteor from 1919-24. It has a chaindriven SEM magneto.
Any information about the Gray is worth a lot to me ! |

The magneto was not an easy nut to crack. But that is perhaps the fun with this hobby. It never gets boring. Here is a picture of a very common swedish engine from 1948 Albin 02 not exactly an exciting thing.  |

Norway have had 152 marine engine makers through the years. ....Sweden a lot too.
