So I'm new to the old school point system. Trying to figure out why I am not getting spark at the plugs. Checked coil, seems to be outputting voltage as it showed spark when i just connected the sec coil output to the tester and then to ground. The only time I am able to get a spark through the whole system is when i align the rotor with the spark plug and use the negative output on the coil to act as a trigger(I remove and touch the two connections at the negative coil point). If i just connect the negative to the distributor and turn the key I see nothing. any ideas? |

Had a look inside the distributor, not sure if that neg is grounding out on the housing where the bolt passes through, looks like there is a metal clip that could be causing the problem. Is this a normal setup? Also, anyone know the part number for this type of distributor? and yes i remove the condenser. Thanks!

Did you replace the condenser just prior to the problem occurring ? |

With the condenser in place, coil primary wire off, ignition switch on, points open, touch the wire to the terminal and see if it arcs. Should be no arc, if it arcs something is shorted in the distributor. If no arc, turn the engine until the points close, try touching the wire, you should get an arc. If not, the points aren't making contact, if so, try to crank the engine and see if you get spark from the coil. |

Got a great spark now, but still dont have good start. I get it to turn over, but it only turns over very slowly for a few sec then stops after i stop the starter. spark plugs are pretty black, so it maybe running to rich. How do you guys go about starting the engine cold? throttle, choke position? Thanks agian |

Have you set the ignition timing? If it's cranking slow remove the coil wire from the cap and ground it, try cranking it, if it spins fast timing is probably advanced too far. |

Eddie Ross: yes, i got it in, works great. J.B: Not sure what you mean, if i remove the coil wire i wouldn't get any spark at the plugs. I don't see a difference in speed when i remove the coil. I think I didn't explain my problem correctly. After i turn the key to crank the engine it only "runs" for a few sec. And in those few sec its runs really really slow. I set the engine to top dead center on the counter weight in front and the rotor is right on the correct point for 1 one cylinder. No backfire is occurring. Im going to look at the carb Wednesday and see if its not all gummed up. Thanks Agian! |

After installing the new ignition the timing will have to be set. If it's late the engine will be lazy and make no power. I'm not familiar enough with this engine to give you specific instructions, you will need a timing light. There should be a mark on the crank pulley and one on the engine. If you don't have a timing light, see if you can find the marks, line them up, put a spark plug in #1 wires, retard the distributor (move in the direction of rotation), with the switch on advance the distributor, (against rotation), when it sparks timing will be close to correct spot. You can move the distributor back and forth watching for the spark, try to stop as soon as it sparks. |

The engine is running great right now! For anyone else that is having issues with points. The "PerTronix 1548 Ignitor for Prestolite 4 Cylinder" was the best thing I ever got. Thanks again for the help J.B! |
