3/4" shaft with 10" prop, long reach coupling and bearings, why the bearings? http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n210/wrenchguy49/SAM_0161_zpspir4p1sw.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n210/wrenchguy49/SAM_0164_zpsb3antg9p.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n210/wrenchguy49/SAM_0165_zpsgptwjibz.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n210/wrenchguy49/SAM_0163_zpsjebopsux.jpg |

Mike, I can only guess that someone must have had some sort of mount to act as a whip strut somewhere in the middle. With the regular shaft log though, I can't see where it would gain much of anything on a relatively short length. Steve |

The bearing is mounted backwards to taking any thrust from the prop in the forward direction. It could be the bearing was used to take the thrust when the boat / engine were in reverse. The only thing holding the shaft into the hub would be a set screw. If the set screw were loose, then the shaft would wiggle out, you'd lose the key into the bilge and the boat would essentially be adrift. I know, because it's happened to me. Miro |

I agree its for reverse as shown, even the ballbearing with its outer race looks installed take reverse thrust too. maybe when this was removed from the hull it was put back on the shaft random wrong. the coukping hub is 2 keyed and held with nut and cotter. that maybe raises more questions.... thanks 4 commenting. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n210/wrenchguy49/SAM_0173_zpsta0jctuh.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n210/wrenchguy49/SAM_0174_zpscxjkmtne.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n210/wrenchguy49/th_SAM_0175_zpsxobjaer1.jpg |

perhaps the tapered bearing was merely used for it's inner race as a spacer-sleeve/ or interference-fit backing which could have been pressed up the shaft to the right position for the ball race!? Oh Boy! |
