Perhaps you boaties across the pond might be able to help out with some historical info on a Baldridge reversing gearbox I found. It appears quite old, with a groove for a rope seal along the case joint and felt shaft seals, planetary gears, 1 inch output shaft, and made by -
Smith and Baldridge Machine Co
Detroit
Michigan
USA.

Baldridge was one of the pioneers in reverse gears
and were shipped world wide.

Well, there you go - another piece of history!
Thank you, Richard. Do you happen to know when the change between 'The Baldridge Gear Co' to 'Smith and Baldridge Machine Co' (or the other way around)occurred? I intend to fit it behind a Blaxland twin 5-7HP I am currently assembling, and put the lot into a 16 ft Chapman launch that is currently filling my garage, awaiting lots of work. A nice touch is that the launch came with two original Chapman badges made from a hard rubber moulding. The plan is to chug down the Murray River in 2007 in this launch and my 11 ft 6 inch WHIMBREL fitted with a Vinco 2 3/4 HP. We have successfully talked two Canadian friends into coming over and accompanying us on this venture.

OK, name and site change between 1909 and 1913.
Many thanks, Richard. You are a mine of information. I will certianly post some pics of progress. At the moment I am studiously ignoring the upside down 16' hull completely filling my garage (along with WHIMBREL!), as I am deeply engrossed in house repainting. However - for some strange reason - the paint along one plank is slowly, mysteriously and gradually being stripped. Puzzling.

Hi, I have a Baldridge model 8 gearbox. It came attached to an unknown 4 stroke 2 cylinder engine. The engine has atmospheric inlet valves (automatic inlet valves) and drip feed oilers to each cylinder. Do you know if and when Baldridge manufactured 4 stroke marine engines? I have not been able to identify this engine as it does not have any markings on it at all. Do you have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

Good photos of all sides of an engine is best way to put a name on an unknown. You can post on here or if trouble e-mail photos to Andrew here, or to me and we'll post them.
