I need help identifying this engine. I attached 3 links for pictures so you can see it. I would like to know if possible:

Who made them?
When?
What color were they?
Uses for them other than barges?
It has been running and fired with a Model T coil. I wonder what others used on engines like this for ignition?
Any ideas how much it's worth?

Luke, I take it the base casting is part of the crankcase? (gas charge is pressurized in it?)
The flywheel in the back of view #2 is for this engine? Does the flywheel extend down past the bottom of the base casting?
I have no info on the engine but was just thinking that the base looks like something from a stationary setup (non marine) The attach points look a little weak for marine use...Just an observation. It looks like a pretty small engine? 1HP or so?

Hi Tom,

It's a friends engine and I've not seen it in person yet. I don't think the base is part of the crank case judging by other pictures of engines that look similar. Yes the flywheel is for the engine and appears it would stick below the base from the size of it. Maybe by a couple inches. I think it is a little bigger than a 1 hp but I'm not that framiliar with the marine engines and the RPM's they run at. There is also a shaft and propeller in the back ground of the pics and it too belongs with this engine and fits into the coupling on the end of the crank shaft. The gentlemen that owns the engine says when he got it the person he got it from says it came out of a barge. There is another engine pictured here:

http://www.herculesengines.com/marine/unidentifiedmarineengine.htm

and it looks the same but with out the base under it. I have a few pictures of another engine from a show I went to and it looks just like these two in the links I put up. Any ideas/guesses on a manufacturer?
