Hello All, I hope the winter is being kind to you and all of your projects are progressing. I am working on a Lathrop Type 16, which is a 2 cylinder, 2 cycle 16 hp with a paragon reverse gear. It is, as they all are, 95% complete. The gear is complete, and the engine is in great shape. I'm missing the correct flywheel, and two of the dual oilers for the cylinder wall. From the catalogue, the flywheel should be 24 inch diameter and 4 1/2 inch across the face with a 1 7/8 bore for the crankshaft. I have a smaller flywheel that's 19 inch diameter and 4 inch face with a 1 3/4 bore that would work if I bored in out and forgot about the weight difference, but it seems a shame to cut up a good known Lathrop flywheel. I would like to find and acquire the correct flywheel but I'd be happy if somebody had one to lend me to have copied. I know oilers are pretty dear but if someone has one to copy or a set to sell, I'd be interested. The last thing is information about magnetos for the Lathrops. My catalogue shows what looks like a Bosch DU style, but it isn't specifically spelled out as such. Does anyone have a Lathrop with a vertical shaft and Mag? This one has a mag bracket and drive gear from the front vertical shaft but that's it... Thanks in advance, George IV |

Thanks Richard, What I have looks more like the 3 cylinder above. It has the timer and the mag bracket with no provisions for igniters. The link with the DU info is awesome. George IV |

I'll say! I like the compromise between bright and shiny and authentic. Nice to see the proper old beaded pipe fittings and no plated bolts. Check valves original or reproductions? Interesting 90 degree fittings on the feeds to the manifold. Haven't seen those before. |

Dear George, What a great job you have done with that Lathrop. It came from a dealers junk heap about 10 miles above the "Nice" bridge on RTE 301. My son Richard found it about 1970. The dealer let a junk dealer strip off the easy brass and the exhaust manifold was gone when I got it. He also took a sledge hammer to the pump which he proceeded to mess up but didn't get it. About that time Rick got wind of it and stepped in and we hauled it up to Severna Park where we were living at that time. Took me a year to get the flywheel key out without damaging the flywheel. Just glad to know it will soon be finished and hope it shows up at the CMM show. As I understand the water-man owner came down the Potomac River to fish and the water was fresh most of the time hence little salt water damage to the water jackets etc. You have done a remarkable job rescuing from the trash heap. |

Great job!!! Old Man Lathrop didn't believe in mixing oil in the two cycle engine fuel but his customers sure did. |

Bruce and Robert, Your attention to detail is quite remarkable. The PTO is from a 9N but a friend of mine brought his Kubota to use as a starter. Thank goodness he did. Even after running, its a stiff, heavy beast! The fuel inlet covers are off because the front carb was starving. It turns out when I soldered the fuel lines together, a wayward drop of solder occluded the fitting. George IVy |

Hello, my sister in Sweden lives on a barge that has an OLD Lathrop engine. S/N 7416402 if that helps. She is looking to renovate it but needs to know where she can find spare parts before she starts to break it down. I have pictures of the barge, if anyone is interested. THANK YOU! You bet we're interested! But start another thread for that would you? Your sister's engine is much more modern than George's. |

Looking at the tag I'm going to suggest that your sister's engine was not actually manufactured by Lathrop of Mystic CT. In it's last years Lathrop purchased other manufacturer's engines and marinized them (and branded them Lathrop). This is probably a good thing for your sister in that once you can identify the base engine parts may be fairly easy to locate. Does your sister have any idea of the year of the engine? (Growing up, my family's boat had a pair of 1964 "B&W Lathrop" diesels that were actually Hercules industrial diesels that Lathrop marinized.) Hmmmmmm,.......... "Hercules" also manufactured gasoline engines.....(just a wild thought based on no real information.) |

Oh,... It is a diesel! (Sorry,.. when I saw the reference to "timing" on the tag I incorrectly thought gasoline.) I'm going take a stab at it being a Hercules engine. ... Does it have a "Roosa-master" fuel injector pump? The fuel injectors and fuel lines look like what I remember. If it is the engine I'm thinking of it is rated at 115 hp naturally aspirated, something like 135hp turbocharged, and 155 hp turbocharged and intercooled. And rated at 2800 RPM. This engine is at least turbocharged (by the pictures) (Edit,.......Oops,... Duhh,.. yes, if I looked at the tag again first I would have seen this. So the engine is turbocharged and intercooled, and rated at 155hp & 2800 RPM. This is the same engine as the two that I grew up with.) With a bit of googling, I am thinking more that this is a Hercules engine. Parts should be pretty available. You just need to figure out exactly which engine it is. You would probably need numbers off the block in addition to what is on the tag. Does your sister have the manual or any paperwork? |

Ok,......... It's looking like this is a "B&W Lathrop D155V" marine Diesel engine. That looks like it is what you should be looking for. There appear to be a couple of places that specialize in parts and service for this engine. (I'm not sure, but this engine may also have been used in some military trucks.) Oh,.... and yes, this engine was also used in lots of trucks and industrial applications (not just marine), which makes parts and service much easier to find. These were real solid engine with good reputations. Unless there is some sort of catastrophic problem the engine should be completely rebuildable and able to keep going and going. |
