I AM ON A QUEST TO FIND THE ENGINE IN A MICHIGAN FISH TUG I WAS ON AS A CHILD . BETWEEN ME AND MY UNCLE WE THOUGHT IT WAS A DIESEL ( OR OIL ) 2 STROKE OPEN CASE OR VISIBLE CRANKSHAFT ENGINE . MY UNCLE THINKS HE REMEMBERS A SMALL BLOWER AND AN AIR TANK . WERE THERE EVER A 2 STROKE OPEN CRANK ENGINE MADE. 2 STROKES ARE CHARGED FROM CRANK CASE PRESSURE I THOUGHT . ANY IDEAS ? |

Yes an open crank 2 stroke diesel is possible with a blower. This being said I have not heard of one. Now that being said something new, but actually old related to antique engine technology shows up almost every day so I am NOT saying there was no such thing. If you think the 3 cylinder Campbell looks familiar Bill S may know the history on the one he has. Those engines were built in Lake Wazata,MN. In the list of fish tugs I saw at least one reference to a Campbell engine. From my experience identifying old engines the profile/silhouette in ones mind is often right. If that Campbell engine looks right to you I would lean in that direction. It is human nature to remember visuals much better than verbal descriptions. |

BOTH MY SELF AND MY UNCLE REMEMBER IT BEING DIESEL . HE REMEMBERS A SMALL COMPRESSOR . I REMEMBER HOW SLOW IT FIRED EVEN UNDER WAY IT KCUGGED KCUGGED ALONG THE WAY . SO THAT COULD SAY IT WAS A HOT BULB ENGINE . TED SAYS HE REMEMBERS AN AIR TANK ALSO WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN TO START IT ? DONT KNOW . THE CAMPBELL LOOKS GREAT BUT IS A 4 STROKE GAS ENGINE . |

The GM / Detroit diesel n-71 series engines (2-71, 3-71 etc) are 2 cycle diesels. Although they are not open crankcase engines, they use a Rootes type blower to put air into the cylinder. And they have intake and exhaust valves like a 4 cycle. The slow speed that you recall would mean the blower would have been geared up to a high speed to get enough air pressure to scavenge the spent air / fuel from the cylinder. I also recall visiting a large 2 cycle Fairbanks diesel in Vermont which had an open cranckcase. It reportedly shook the boat visibly when it was idling at the dock. Miro |

some old open crank 2 strokes had a double ended cylinder [ like a steam cylinder ; eg; with piston rod coming thru a gland] the gudgeon being outside on a guide, called a cross-head. This way the bottom end of the cylinder would aspirate the engine. |

THANKS VERY MUCH GUYS BUT MY UNCLE AND MYSELF REMEMBER A 2 STROKE DIESEL AND IT HAD A SMALL BLOWER . FROM WHAT I HAVE READ SO FAR . THE BLOWER IS THE ONLY WAY A 2 STROKE COULD WORK WITH AN OPEN CRANKSHAFT . STILL LOOKING |
