I have just purchased a seized Graymarine 100 I haven't yet picked up the motor but I do know the head had a repair so I'm guessing the motor seized probably related to the repair. Should I assume it to be a 186ci model # is F5149. Any info will help.It is going in a 1941 barrelback Chris-Craft which I've had since 1986.

Are the valves the same part# for the Graymarine 100 5147 the same as the 6-244 express model? and for use of unleaded gas do you recommend that I have installed brass valve seals? I am totally rebuilding this motor and it doesn't have oil filter or thermostat from the factory should I convert to a closed system; I live where the water is generally warm around 80 degrees in the summer and 60 in winter.I also have a water pump on that uses a disk wiith angled impeller blades attatched to both sides of the disk, It seems to be in good order but can I convert this to a standard impeller with a central core and fins protruding outward. Is the old version of the impeller still available and if so what are the part numbers of impellers that I could use?

Thanks,

Frank Columbia

Where do I purchase brochures with a parts list for my graymarine 100 number 5147 and transmission parts list; It is a 1:1 with details of the planetary gears and other parts in the gearcase assembly.

I have a model 1E reverse gear model #57501 It is listed as a capital in the maintenance handbook.I then went to the Identification of parts booklet form 156 where I got the following part names. I found water damage to the driver gear, one of the reverse gear pinions and driven gear. The Driving Flange Drum had to be cut off the crankshaft.I also need to replace all bearings seal and gaskets. Every other part looks exceptionally good. Where can I get parts, and is it a capital or paragon unit?

Much Appreciated,

Frank Columbia

Franco:

I just got a manual for the six-244 and it says you can run the engine on minimum 78-80 octane fuel with or without tetraethyl lead. You should not have to do anything with the valve seats to run it on unleaded fuel.

I have got a Gray Marine express super six engine, six - 244 MS, that is in good condittion and runs fine at higher revs. At stationary rev it runs very irregular and shuts down eventually.
I can't get the Zenith carburettor working proper and already cleaned it twice. Where can I find information on how to make it work and / or where can I get another / similar carburettor that works with this system. Thanks for any advice!

If you have that regulator you have a 3rd brush generator. You ajust the 3rd brush to vari the output. This system is old and outdated for a machine that you are useing and not just showing. The parts are still available to repair tractors and so are conversion parts to go to 12 volt neg.I suggest www.ytmag.com as a good site for parts and conversion info.

Hi All,
So I have an old Ventnor barn find I picked up last year. It appears to have not been in the water in 40 years judging by what I found and the condition of the belt, hoses, clamps, etc, all being very old technology.
It's a 6 volt positive ground electrical system, with dual Zenith carbs, updraft intake manifolds.
When I got it the floats were so far out of adjustment on the carbs that fuel couldn't enter the bowls. I rebuilt both carbs, set the floats, replaced the head gasket, the cylinder walls and valve-train are in great shape, very little wear.
The valves are set to spec. I also rebuilt the starter, new brushes, bushings, cleaned, it has a 6 volt electrical fuel pump, with an integral filter which I cleaned and also replaced the inline fuel filter.
I cleaned the air filters for both carbs, replaced the battery and cleaned all the terminals, wiring etc.
I replaced the head gasket with David Vaness' copper gasket and torqued. New plugs, checked the points, cap, wires, rotor and had to weld new teeth on the flywheel with my TIG welder and filed them up to get the starter to engage.
I've had it on the water a few times, and this last week I made final adjustments to the carb jets, idle and main, also the ignition timing. All in all it runs great, starts up and idles at first push of the button, but I cant get the engine to speed over 3000 rpm and it only goes about 25 mph, the Ventnor literature states that this model with the fireball six 150 should go 42 mph. I've also checked and adjusted the linkages for the carbs and I'm certainly getting full WOT on both. The prop is also in good shape. Does anyone know the maximum rpm for that engine and what am I missing to get more out of it?
It has a delco-remy distributor with a knob adjustment of some kind below the rotor housing, is this a manual advance adjustment?
TIA
Kevin

From my 1950 Graymarine engine manual, The big HP Fireball six's are rated max HP at 4000 RPM. Timing advance issues?? Is the knob shown a grease cup? prop cavitation? All else fails- try a different prop with a bit less pitch. Any pictures of the Ventnor to share-bet it has a FIN!

I think it's timing related , however I have adjusted the timing at WOT and 3200 is the max rpm achieved, if its cavitation the rpm would be higher? I'll see if it's a cup.

No fin on this one, and it's a work in progress but I'm determined to use it more that work on it , I have enough other projects that are only projects not useable.
here's a link to some images!
Thanks!

Change out the points & condenser, There are shades of gray where they will run, but will burn the points up and not perform correctly

Wow Kevin- is that the 18 ft hull?? Ought to haul- ass with the 150 fireball!! Love the non trip chines. Looks like it may be a '48-'49 year based on the "D" engine prefix. I have a plywood '47 -18 ft utility project that came with a 4-75 gray-has a formica ceiling liner and a big chrome bull nose ( circa 1947 trim)at the bow with a stylized "V" cast in it. '47 didn't have transom vents. See Speltz Real Runabouts book volume II pages 42-47

It is an 18 foot. I'll replace the points and condenser and give that a try.
Thanks Bruce for the Speltz recommendation, It's tough finding good information on the Ventnors.

Kevin, did you really pay $200 for it? What a steal! We are restoring a 21' Tailfin runabout. Was fortunate to get some original Ventnor literature and also have extensive info on Graymarine. You can check it out here: www.pleasurebent.com

I volunteer at a museum. Recently we were given a CC Galbraith (Keyport, NJ) 17' runabout with a Gray Marine Phantom Six - 104 engine. Boat and engine are all original. The engine was overhauled/rebuilt 20+/- years ago. The boat and motor have never been back in the water.

Where can I obtain a manual for the engine/ transmission?

What can anyone tell me about the boat?

Hello Bruce and thank you for your reply.
sorry I did not was specific in my question. Since there are no external oil filter change, is there a filter for replacement or cleaning? A huge thank you in advance, Alex

No filter needing service..Be mindful that there is a oil pick up screen in the base that could clog should you develop oil pressure problems . Check with the moderator here to see if a service manual is available for your Gray engine.
