Mickey,

If you have a question about the Westerbeke 4-107 you should ask it in the diesel category of the MarineEngine.com site. This site, OldMarineEngine.com is for older inboards.

Also, you should ask your full question... someone will probably help.

Andrew

I'm looking for information on old engines (gas or Diesel) that had walking beam valve actuation. I've heard that it was common (?) about the 1890's. I heard that an old Lozier gas engine was running in a sawmill in northern California until just recently (1970 or 80's). Though not stated, it was implied that it had walking beams. Probably other makers tried this layout back then (?) May have been used in Tugs of fishers.

Any leads, links, drawings, x-sections, articles, anything at all would be welcomed.

Thanks

What is the reputation of older John Deere diesel engines in the marine environment? Are they as good as Lehman engines?

The older engines of many types were and still are often industrial engines that have been converted to marine ie "marinized" by dealers or otherwise in order to be used in the marine environment. The decision that you may need to consider particularly when considering older engines is the service support and what parts are available in order for you to run the thing and look after it..It is one thing to restore something and completely another to consider your own capabilities and how much time and expertise you can afford to the project.

Daniel,

Are you sure those numbers are correct?

The serial number for a Detroit should contain the following letters to designate it as part of the following models:

  • 6A or 4A : Inline 6 or 4 cylinder 71 Series
  • 8VA : V 71 Series
  • VF : 92 Series
  • D or DV : 53 Series
  • R : 60 Series

Let me know if you can find anything similar in your serial number.

We also sell the Detroit Diesel manuals.

Regards,
Andrew

My vessel has a pair of Ford Lehman 140 hp diesel engines (1973) installed. Can anyone tell me:

1: What should the cruising RPM of these engines be? What is there max?
2: How much fuel do they typically use in GPH at cruising RPM?
3: What size and type of fuel filters should I be using?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

ANDREW,
would it be possible for you to post a picture or two of the very elusive "51" series engine. I saw one of these fitted in a little tractor shovel back about 1953/4, a 2 cyl. job, and have never seen or heard about them since. I believe they were only made in the 2 and 4 cyl. size. Is that correct?? And also that they became (with redesign) the 53 series. Hoping you can help. Ray.

In responce to anthony above all ford engines used a standard casting number system.Unfortureatly i only know the one that i have worked on.The first 2 letters were for the countery, the next 2 were for the factory and so on.If you see ELLADIN its a ford diesel made in england to be used in tractors.A good ford parts man will know the system.

Hi jb_castagnos and thanks to reply.
Does low compression means that it's not running properly or efficiantly ?
The boat is a 32 feet beneteau ( max speed 7 knots) and actually reachs 6.5 knots speed with 2400 rpm. The white smoke is only whithin the 15 seconds after starting .

Looking for answers why a 180 Ford turbo smokes while idling. eg putting fuel slick on water. Motor does not use engine oil. Timing is ok and so is compression test.

A leaking injector would be the first answer. They could all be removed and bench tested. On farm engines we loosen the exauhst manifold and run the engine. The cylinder that leaks out there will be the one with the leaker.

Hi Don you should be able to find bronze bearing stock already sized for the 3/4 shaft very easily but you will need to measure the inside of whatever hole you put it in to make sure that it is standard. You will also need to make sure that there is an additional clear hole present in the side of the bearing housing somewhere so that water can cirulate between the shaft and the bearing for cooling, and you will need some rope seal for the stuffing box to keep it from filling up the boat. You might be able to get by with regular crankshaft rope seal from an auto parts store, or if you look around you might be able to find some metalic rope packing that will come in the form of rings with a split in them that you can stack in the stuffing box, these are nothing more than the usual rope seal but surrounded in a foil with strong thread woven neatly around that so they are a bit more durable and they are normally found in an industrial setting where millwrites would be maintaining pumps like in a pulp mill. Yes there will need to be a stuffing box of some kind on your cutlass bearing housing and the housing should line up with the studs you described on your boat and you may need to make one because the chances of finding one that fits the sizes and shapes of your boat are slim, and you need a way to squeeze down on the packing to control the amount of water that will get past at the shaft and get into the boat. When the boat is sitting for long periods of time and you don't want water dripping into your boat you should be able to tighten down the stuffing box so that it will not drip at all, but remember to back the tension off when you are ready to start turning the shaft again. Someone with a lathe and a welder would probably be able to make one faster than you can locate one that will fit your boat correctly.

help please. I have searched a lot of sites trying to find the right size prop. It seems that if you don't have a old prop to size you are in trouble. I am installing a 3hp.diesel motor in a 16.ft.alum flat bottom boat.useing a 3/4 inch 20 mm. ss shaft. coneced to a simplex thrust gear box . the max rpm on the motor is 2500 I am afraid that I might end up with a prop that will only stall the motor. are one to small to move the boat . I am not to worried about the speed as the motor is small. but need to be able to push me along (to old to row) any help please. thanks Don

Hi Don I wouldn't worry too much about stalling that diesel, even if it is only 3hp., it's the torque that counts not the horse power. What ever you find that will fit that 3/4 inch shaft might be close enough, it's the size of the taper that I would worry about.

Sounds like you want to go a lot slower? ;-) Lister aircooled are good, or maybe a small Gardner like a 3LW? Course if you want to go fast perhaps a couple of turbo Isuzu engines...Caterpillar, the list goes on.

Whiteox 3. The way to determine which prop you need is to face aft looking at the direction of rotation of the propeller shaft when the engine is turning for "go ahead." If the shaft turns clockwise you need a left hand prop. If the shaft turns counter clockwise you need a right hand prop. I note the prop shaft rotation not the engine rotation in case there is a reduction gear or V drive in a particular application. Some of these units reverse the normal rotation of the prop shaft from that of the engine. If the engine is a direct drive where the prop shaft turns the same direction as the engine then face the flywheel end of the engine and note its rotation. Clockwise it is a right handed engine and takes a left handed prop. Counterclockwise it is a left handed engine and it takes a right handed prop. This of course assumes the prop shaft drive is connected to the end of the crankshaft opposite the flywheel end.

I have a 1.5 litre BMC diesel engine (probably circa 1970) in a 24 ft Carvel motor sailer, and have discovered diesel trickling out of the side of the engine which then ends up on the bilge. Is this a serious fault or simply a new gasket? I would really appreciate knowing who carries these parts world wide, I gather that parts are made in India. Thanks Peter

WTB complete Buda-Lanova diesel 6DT-317. Either in running or rebuildable condition. Also need the correct automotive type transmission appropriate to the engine either 3,4 ot 5 speed with bell housing and double plate clutch assembly. If necessary I will buy the junk vehicle that it's currently in.
My restoration project is at a standstill until I get my powerpack. I will buy direct or thru a refferal with finders fee.

"OldMarineEngine.com will be the pre-1940 engines built for motor canoes, motor launches, dories, skiffs, and other pleasure or work boats up to about 30' in length. Thanks for visiting."

I see a lot of questions relating to 'Late model' engines here. Later engines would probably get more answers than questions on sites just for those engine brands, ie: Diesel dealers & repair shops, specific discussion groups... It's amazing how many calls we get at our shop just for questions... Just my 2 pennies worth.

Jim:
Sorry, my intent is not to be a thread nag, but i noticed a lot of questions that don't get answers. The complexity of the various diesels VS. the ol'd gas engines require more info like All Id numbers, And of course some one on the other end who has that info to share. I try to help out with Detroit Diesels & some Perkins but thats about as far as I can help.

David Shaffner:
Your question on Detroit 60 Marinizing.
These engines did'nt see as much in the marine world as like the old 2 cycles, The industial and marine divison is now MTU. Stewart & Sevenson used to build up tons of marine Detroits, I don't know if they still do.
Check out this site for possible info: http://boatdiesel.com/Engines/Detroit-Diesel/Detroit-Diesel.cfm

Our boat club acquired an old work boat with a GM Diesel in it. The plate on the side if the valve cover has the Model as 62206-RD and the Unit as 6B-15563. I have looked on line and have not been able to find GM diesel numbers like these. Any help would be great.
Thanks very much.

Peter,
6B means that you have a 6-110. RD signifies Left hand rotation viewed from the rear and the blower and exhaust on the right hand side when viewed from the rear. WW Williams purchased the rights to these engines and is one of the last major parts suppliers. On my facebook (link in my profile) page you can see one that I recently was rebuilding.

Cheers
Nobby
