I got this Gray last night and took several pictures this morning that can be seen here:

Can you tell me its horsepower, the year it was built etc.........
The motor does not have a brass tag but the serial number is stamped on both cylinders and on the flywheel.

This should be a 1911 Model R (originally with drip oilers) 9 Hp should be a 4 inch bore !
Detroit type reverse gear with Gray cast plate is rare !
Nice old original engine !

at flywheel or gib key ?

It has a nut on the crankshaft; it looks just like Mr.Rouleau's. Would it be around 1911 as well?

I just bought this engine from Denis. Any info you can give me, or point me in the right direction would be great. The electrical setup would be a great help. I'm new to rebuilding/restoring these engines. Michael |

I suggest you start by getting a copy of Dick Day's booklet on running Palmer gas engines. The principles will be basically the same for your Gray. You can order it here:

Michael, the Palmer book Dick recommends will give you a lot of info, Mr. Day put a lot of thought into it. These engines used a "buzz coil" ignition. Ford Model T coils were generally used, they are readily available. Here's a link to making your own, I made this for my boat when the wooden T coil drowned in a thunder storm, been using them since.
