Due to the persistance of Bruce Hall who located a 3 HP Engine built by or for the Atlantic Boat Company of Amesbury Mass around 1907 and the kindness of Hugh Durgen who was willing to sell it, I now can continue the restoration of my pre 1900 Atlantic Sea Skiff also built by thr Atlantic Boat Company. Working with Andy Schmerhorn and Bruce we examined, reassembled and ran the engine for a short time. In trying to learn as much as I can about these motors since they are new to me, I was reading about what would be the best grease for the Main Crankshaft Bearings. What confusion that created for me as it seems there is no consencise. High temp, low temp, sticky, stringy. Lithium based was one common denominator but no other that I could find. A Lucus sticky was in several articles. What do the experts from Old Marine Engine recommend ?? Thanks Walter |

Any good grease will lube the bearings, if the bearings are good, no problem. If the bearings are loose, a heavy fiber grease may last longer and help seal crankcase pressure. Good bearings will hold grease and when screwing down the cups you will hit a hydraulic lock. worn bearings will let the grease bypass and you can continue screwing down on the cup. |

I agree with JB. I use plain old wheel bearing grease in all my engines unless the bearings are worn. Then I use some sort of thick stuff. The thicker the better Hope this helps Ernie |
