i Am about to assemble a basket case of a engine, 2-53 ,checked with plastic gauge,1/4 life was gone in this engine. bought new sleeves, pistons, rings, seals, gaskets.
Im questioning the O-rings that seal the water jacket do they go in dry or can i use some vasoline? |

I remember reading a Cummins builiten years ago saying not to use petroleum lubricant on sleeve orings, it would cause them to swell and distort the sleeve. I don't rembe what they recomended, probably a soap based rubber lube. |

Just google sleeve o ring lubrication.
There is tons of info and also youtube vids
I remember using soap of some sort.
Maybe just go jo with out the fine Italian pumice

I found in the 53 Series Maintenance Manual, that they said to Apply a Hydrogenated Vegetable type shorting, or permanent type antifreeze solution to the Seal Rings. |

Some liquid soap is the usual favourite or antifreeze. Personally I use Murphys Oil Soap on O Rings used sparingly.
Whats critical is how much you use and how viscous, if you fill the O-Ring cavity with lubricant as well as the O-Ring you'll hydraulic the O-Ring and it can start to be pushed out before the liner sealing surface fully passes it and hence the O-Ring will get cut/damaged.
