Keith's Waterman The carbs aren't polished due to swapping carbs around to get good adjust-ability. Note the gear between the engine and reverse gear. There is a hot rod starter buried under the engine. Just push the button and it starts. Adjustable Hydraulic load. We just set it to the RPM Keith wants at wide open throttle then adjusted timing and mixture as needed.

That's another beautiful piece from Keith's workshop. Can't wait to see how it performs in the boat. Just wondering, does the hydraulic fluid heat fast? |

Not that I noticed. I felt the hoses in and out of the pump a couple of times and didn't notice a huge difference. I think the longest we ran it at wide open was maybe 5 min at a time over several hours. Once we got the adjustment on the carbs close it didn't need to be run long to check adjustment changes. |

Had to put two pairs of sunglasses on just to see the details- that are just to many to list, the machined gear and couplings, bending those grease cup lines so perfect also has my attention and an electric starter ?? Thanks to this site and the help of Ernie we are close on a final tune. One more session when he passes thru next month. I can make the parts and assemble, but am at a loss for debugging and tuneing for optimum performance. Since the engine is going in a 24' Long Deck Launch, optium performance is important. The engine will be under a hatch and virtually in accessible when under way. |

It sure was fun getting it to where we did the other day. The topping on the cake was going out in the driveway behind it when it was running under load. It sure does sound sweet. It was also neat to get the mixtures correct and hear it clear out and run clean on all 4 cylinders. I need to learn more about adjusting Kingston carbs so for now it has Schebler D,s on it. |

That is a very nice engine. I am restoring a 25 foot 1923 wood launch and at some point I will need a period correct motor for it. So if anyone knows of a nearly complete restorable project let me know. I have a machine shop with an engine dyno and can handle almost any type of rebuild/restoration.}}} |

I was walking down the street one day, and I saw an engine try to jump out the back of a truck. I would have saved it, but I didn't think it would shine up very nice.

Bill, That engine hasn't changed. It is still in the same clothes. The shinny one is one digit off. One is serial no. 1106 and the other is 1107. One came out of Wyoming and the other out of New England. One has 4 Ball Kingston carbs and the other has the Breeze (spelling?) carbs. The exhaust manifold is a larger diameter on the restored engine. Pipe size is the same, its just that the water jacket is larger. |

Based on what you all have described, that engine knows that it OUGHT to behave - especially about getting the mixture set up right for the 2 pairs of cylinders. And Ernie, you get a gold star too, for setting it up and getting it to run under full load without backfiring. As others have said very good work done here. As for the sound - it must sound like a purring kitten at speed and full load. miro |

Keith - a couple of questions: Is the firing order 1342 ? If yes, then you are a wonder-worker at making that crankshaft. Did you fuss with restrictors in the water flow through the system to get the cylinders more or less balanced? Ernie - you simply HAVE to make a video of this one running miro |

Miro, The firing order is 1-3-2-4. I did modify the exit hole at the top of the water jacket. The originals were all the same. I went from .500 on the rear cylinder, .458 on #3, .416 on #2 and .375 on the front cylinder. With the pump on the front and common feed and dump piping, I thought it would help cool the rear cylinders. Until running the engine under load for an extended period of time and with the carbs adjusted we won't know if it was the thing to do. Bob, The brass gear(9" in diameter) is the starter ring gear. The starter is tucked under the reverse gear. There will be a cover installed over the gear. |

Keith and I went out in the driveway aft of the exhaust when it was running under full load. Lets just say it speaks with authority! The purring kitten may have been in the house next door. Not sure as I couldn't hear it. |

Hi Keith The engine looks great. Looks like you will be the first in the water at the rate you are going. Could you tell me what diameter the starting gear is and what sort of starter you mounted on it. I need a similar set up for the 3 cyl Elbridge I have in my 24 footer. Thanks Foxman |

Foxman, The gear is 9 inches in diameter. The starter is a little chrome unit made for Street Rods. The one I have is for a V-8 Chevy. |

Stephen, Regarding starter parts, I use Jacks Small Engines. They have a huge inventory and prices are reasonable.
