Looking for Fay and Bowen T head |

My shop is restoring a 33' 1916 Fay and Bowen torpedo stern, arranged like an auto-boat. We're looking for the correct engine for this boat. By the position and length of the bedlogs it appears the original engine was the L63. But these are so rare we would feel okay using an L43. I have only ever seen one L63 and one L43, and know of an L41 and I believe an L64. Does anyone out there have any insight into where we might be able to find such an engine? It's a worthy project, done with care and done to be used. |

Just to add--The St Lawrence Engine Company in Brockville was licensed by F&B to build these engines in Canada. |

The only T-head F&B of any size, I saw this past summer in a big Niagara Launch at the Clayton ABM Summer show. John Hilton is close by you-never know what he might have under a blue tarp in his yard... |

Thanks, Bruce--Yes, the Niagara up in Clayton has that 4 cylinder engine, but it is assumed that is the original engine in that boat. Since the hope is that boat will get restored one day--while in rough shape, it's a fascinating and worthy project--it would be a hard decision to remove that engine for the boat in my shop. And yes, the other engine I know of belongs to John Hilton but it, too, is with its original Golden Arrow hull. That's a 6 cylinder engine. |

Bill Morgan of Morgan Marine had one ( a 4 cylinder) at his shop on Lake George. He told me it was for sale. This was about 10 years ago. I don't know what happened to it or the business after he passed away (last year, I think). I didn't make an offer on it at the time as it was a bit too big for the launch I was restoring. I really don't know much more than this, but in the absence of any other lead it might be worth checking out. It sounded like it was about 1915-1917 ish era. |
