I want information about the Crossley diesel engines, which were fitted into the Motor Mine Sweepers (MMS) built in GB during WW2. They were of abt 500 hp, 8 cyls, but were they 2-stroke or 4-stroke? What is the type called and where do I find a photo/description of it? |

I might be able to get a manual photocopy for you if you can cover my outgoings. Spares are pretty minimal, you can try Crossley (Rolls Royce) in Manchester but don't hold your breath... Trying to sort through these various posts is a bit of a nightmare! Crossley produced both straight-8 680hp and V-8 680hp engines. The HRN6 was a 2-cycle pressure charged engine with proprietary fuel sprayer equipment. The HRL series was an earlier version and only in straight format. Crossleys are in Manchester, UK and do respond to requests for service data, but they also expect users to try and correspond through their agents rather than directly. I have a number of catalogues from the 1930's to 1960's for diesels of all types, but no specific service or parts info for Crossley engines, only sales data. Peter |

I am a member of the Sydney heritage fleet and work on the old double end ferry "Kanagra" (restoration at the moment) and she has a straight eight ,HRL? i'm not fully sure,of 600hp @ 450 rpm, and may be able to copy the manual when we get it as well photos. |

as an apprentice from 1951 to 1957 at Crossley’s in Manchester, I thought I would point out that the HRN and HSN series used pressure pulse supercharging, being two stroke engines they use a scavenge pump that supplies extra air than is required to purge the cylinder, the extra air following the exhaust out into the exhaust manifold is forced back by the next cylinder’s pressure pulse, that is intensified by putting a narrower length of exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold, from memory they worked out the length and diameter of this piece of pipe more by trial and error than anything else, but any one thinking it was in there by mistake and putting a normal length in its place will lower the engines HP, but probably course less wear and tear, I remember there used to be some controversy between the engineer’s about the possibility of dirt being forced back into the cylinder by the pressure pulse, but if they are still around after all this time it can’t have been that harmful, I would appreciated if anyone has any photo’s of the HRN or CRL type engines they would email one, cheers Bryan |

Have manual for Crossley engines, many cylinder varients, 3 4 6 8 cylinders in line. Huge pistons force fed 2 strokes, some with turbos. Anyone interested I will get the models and post them. Tony |

We are currently removing a Crossley HRN6 (#148183) from a vessel, located in Toronto Canada. 1) Does anybody know the weight of a naturally aspirated HRN6? 2) Does anybody know of a good home for the engine? It needs rebuilding, but is in excelent shape externally (chromed pipes, nuts, etc) and would look great in a museum (or a restoration project). Or parts. We have a few spares (liners, pistons, con-rods, bearings, scavenging valves, gears, injectors, etc...) Please let us know if there is any interest. |

That looks well cared for. What's the problem with it? I was 'driving' an HR4 yesterday (its older brother), it looks a real scruff compared to that one, though. There are a couple of people in the UK who break Crossleys for spares, if you don't find a home for it let me know & I'll put you in touch. A better fate than the scrapyard ;-) Tim |

I bought the fishing boat "Madame Prunier" from LT. in 1959. She had a 3Cyl HRN or HRL Crossley engine and I can't remember which. It was the one with uncooled pistons. Can anyone help me? I was a skipper/owner most of my life and am trying to write about it in detail. Gerry Doyle. |

Over here in Aussie land in Sydney many of our old double ended ferries had 8 cylinder Crossley's. They were reversible and air start with a continuous fixed prop shaft from end to end attached to a propeller at each end. One of these engines is in a ferry which belongs to the "Sydney Heritage Fleet" which specialises in restoring and operating heritage vessels of all types. Regards Ric

Hi everyone, Ihave an ERL.4 Crossley Marine Engine. I am looking for the sale and expressions of interest of this engine. It comes with the books for installing and parts of the engine.I even have the shipping papers when it came to Australia from Liverpool in 1958.It has never been run since coming to Australia even has the red wax inside.Also the Certificat of Test before shipping. |

Hi - Sydney Heritage Fleet has HRN parts book and manual - very detailed. Ditto for ERN series. All marine engines. Can organise copies. Parts are still a problem - these engines went through pistons and heads with up to 240 starts a shift. |

Hi, Sounds good. The Kestrel was built in 1905 and was powered by a triple expansion steam engine. It was repowered with the Crossley in the 50's. The engine has no ID plates on it but going by the 10 1/2" bore , I figure it has to be one of the H series 2 stoke models. The Kestrel is now owned by the Kestrel Preservation Society and generally is in pretty good condition. The engine hasn't run for 7 years and is proving to be reluctant to turn over. We currently have the heads off and are soaking the pistons in the hope of getting it to turn. My address is Fergus King 601 Welcome Bay Rd R.D.5 Tauranga 3175 New Zealand. Thanks for your help. |

Hi Fergus - will dig out+copy+send HRN manual + parts book. You probably know all this, but this is what we did on http://www.shf.org.au/Kanang/Kanang.html Our crank would not move even a tiny bit. Our mild steel barring levers bent when the engine was tight and we needed crowbars (we would not use chain block assistance). We were able to pinch bar the bottom ends fore and aft. We ended up attending to tight pistons, scavenge pump, mains and shaft line bearings. We also pulled the coupling bolts. We did not have to worry about prop shafts (2 off) as these were pulled years ago. |

Hi , It sounds as though we are fighting the same problems you had. Do you know where we can get liners from? I think we will have to replace them as the chrome is delaminating at the top of the bore and we are likely to catch a ring. I emailed sealanddiesel but have had no reply as yet. Do you know if there is an engine number stamped any where other than on the ID plates. Some one has pinched the plates so I'm not sure which model we are dealing with. Is yours back together or is it still a work in progress. If we get totally stuck, we might have to come over and pay a visit. |

Hi Andy, Received manuals today, thank you very much. They are going to be a huge help. The detail is impressive. We now have all the pistons, rods and liners out. Hi everybody!! Well I've jumped well deep in the lake feet first i think.I have just purchased and fell pity on a 3 cylinder Crossley DSR-3 two stroke engine in need of full rebuild its been laying in a scrap yard in a shed for many a year.Has any body got any idea what year these where built any books or parts they say it came out off a submarine but that's here say!!!Its i ronic as talking to my mother she said that my grandad worked at crossley brothers as an engineer learning his apprentship before going of to Rolls Royce as cheif technician on the Merlin engine. many thanks Tim |

Hi all , I have an ESL 5 Crossley 250 hp @ 750 rpm which is the land version of the marine ESN , not much different between them . Like lots of others on here looking for parts , mainly the oil pump which has been nicked . like to correspond with anyone else whom may have same model or experience with these engines and of course any spares .
