I just picked this up at a local auction. I can't find any identifiers on it other than the casting numbers on various pieces. The cylinder is "B1", the flywheel, "B3" and the propshaft collar "B8". the cylinder is 6 3/8" diameter and the flywheel is 14" or just a bit under. It is stuck, but from what I can see looking in the exhaust port, I have hopes that it will free up. I'd appreciate any insight anyone can offer and can get more photos or measurements as needed. Thanks Steve

* Steve, searched and found this photo in some 1905 files, the only other one that I have seen of this model! Shows original brass timer lever and curved rod down to crankshaft timer ! * |

Richard, Thanks. This information makes me hope all the more that it will free up and run again. While getting info on engines, how about this one? It is listed on the plate as an auto engine, but.... The cast base would indicate a small stationary engine. This one turns over great. It has an 11" flywheel and the jug is just over 5" in diameter. The carb is very interesting with it being a double stack barrel in a barrel. It looks like the theory was that the lower barrel would regulate how much air ran past the fuel jet tube versus a bypass around it while an upper independent barrel regulated the amount of resulting air/fuel mix would enter the engine.

* If I pulled the photos over I would have seen the tag ?? So far this is a one of a kind marine engine to show up ! It may have been adapted to some other use but its origin is marine. The cast boss on rear of cylinder was for the water pump. The word AUTO is in over 50 marine engine mfgrs names in data base ? a very common usage 100 yrs ago. Data lists 5 STERLING marine engine mfgrs this is the only one in Chicago ! I have never researched this company because an engine had never come to light. This is a marine engine index of 1908 This the only ad I have seen 1906 Very cool to see an Old Marine Engine for the first time !! Posting appreciated ! * |
