Hello,
First time poster here. I was hoping someone could make a suggestion before I just start digging in. It is really hard to push the lever into gear on my '55 Lyman. It is also hard to pull it back to neutral and makes a cracking noise. The tranny says Graymarine right on it, so I think it is actually made by Gray, but not sure. There is a four bolt cover right on top of it. Does anyone know where I should begin with this? I am pretty mechanical. Hopefully it is a common simple fix. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. |

It"s a clutch not a gear. The pressure plate is adjusted with to much load. remove the cover, then remove lock cap screw to back off adjustment 1 notch at a time and test. It may be tight because the plates are worn. |

The reverse gear (clutch) was made by Paragon. The easiest way to understand how it works and how to adjust it is to google 'Chris Craft engine manuals' and find a pdf for just about any of the flat head Chris Craft engines (these are much easier to find on the internet than Graymarine manuals). All these mechanical reverse gears are alike inside and adjust the same.
Too tight is better than to loose. Loose and you wear out the clutch plates |
