i have a 21 foot cruiser, driven by a volvo diesel penta 2 cylinder 25 to 28 hp engine. she has been laid up since oct 04 but will be re-launched tomorrow, 11th april. most of the wiring was re-done, checked and re-checked, new batteries etc. and the engine runs just fine ... no problems there. however, the red charging light remains on after start-up when it should go out. under the dashboard, there are 2 metal covered boxes. one, the charging regulator (i think) has 5 terminals plus earth ... 30h, b+/30, 50, df, d+/61. the other box (don't know what it is or does) has 3 active terminals plus earth positioned at the 4 corners ... d+ which goes to d+/61 on the reg, unknown to df on the reg, unknown to b+/30 on the reg. the dynastart has 3 terminals plus earth ... 30h, df, d+. the charging and associated circuits have all been re-checked but the light still stays on with the engine running. i have cleaned the relay switches inside the 2 boxes to remove any corrosion/oxidisation but haven't tried to run it since then. it has to be either an error in my re-wiring or what is meant to do the charging is faulty ... although i find that hard to believe. i have done away with the original 3 terminal ignition key switch plus starter button and replaced it with a 4 terminal key switch which includes the starter ... marked batt, ign, st and acc. sorry this has been so long-winded but i would seriously appreciate any help to get this red charging light to work as it should. my thanks in advance ... michael. |

The description of "the other box" looks like a relay. The original Bosch charging regulator has a built in relay. It could be replaced by a modern regulator with seperate relay. I have the charging light directly (no relay) connected between terminal 61 of the original regulator and terminal 75 of the starter key switch (75 = cigarette lighter/radio but terminal 15 acts the same). When the engine is idling the light remains on but when RPM increases over 900 the light shuts off and the charging current is OK. |

Mypac, If I were you I would throw the old 5 wire alternator and control gear away, and go down to your scrap yard and buy a modern 50amp alternator which will have all the control gear built in and will only have three wires, battery, warning light and earth (some earth through the body and only have two wires)Parts for the 5 wire ones are getting hard to find. Hi all, URGENTLY REQUIRED>>>.. Volvo Penta MD1B con rod and shell bearings or even the whole piston and con rod together if possible. I had a knocking in the engine and taking it apart found the shells were non-existing and had made the con rod oval slightly. I know they could be very expensive but remember guys I am only on a state pension and would love you forever if you could keep the price down. Many thanks for looking, you can ring me on 07901604481 if you like |

Hi all, I have now a new con rod so thanks. All I need now are rings for the md1B (3.1/2") I read on the site that someone can make them, I know it was back in 2005 but I wonder if he still does?? the part number is 875498. The thread was in miscellaneous under "making piston rings" please help, many thanks |

Rather than making new piston rings why not adapt a comparable set to your Volvo pistons as I am doing.By looking through piston ring catalogues I have found a set of piston rings similar to MD2B rings. The ring grooves will have to be machined to fit but there is lots of meat there to work with. I haven't gotten to that stage of my rebuild yet but don't see why it won't work. |

So I am really curious as to whether those currently in need of rings/parts for their MD have contacted Crom Marine? Their catalogue which looks to be their own and not some generic copy lists parts such as Pistons, Rings, Gaskets etc. I have no need to chase them up, however were I in your shoes before I go machining pistons, which granted yes is a possible method if correct size rings no longer exist. I would definitely give them a call first. Cheers Nobby |

I have found another website that has parts and that is Nautical spare parts, its somewhere in Europe but their prices are a quarter of UK suppliers. I got a set of rings for 39.31 and that includes postage and tax, would have been cheaper but PayPal exchange rate is a bit tight. I rang Bradford Pistons and they don't stock them but would make them for a price. which is VERY expensive. Crom Marine also have parts but not many and are also quite dear. Nautical Spare Parts have everything you need. |

I ordered the rings from Nautical Spare Parts only to find they were out of stock. Finished up getting them from Keyparts UK but for 2.1/2 times the price 86, just need new shells now. By the way, the crank shaft for the MD1 is identical to the MD1B, its just that the piston is bigger (3.5" compared to 3.1" for the MD1). Got a bloke at GLYCO UK to try and find shell bearing of the same size, a bloke called JIM who is very helpful. |

Eric, What us your take on the availability are these companies using old stock or are the parts still technically available? I ask because I am sat on a couple of MD1's that may very well need a bore freshen up and if necessary I'll stock in parts now. Cheers Nobby |

Hi Nobby, it is hard to say whether or not they are original old stock, the rings sent by Keyparts are made by GOETZE yet Nautical Spare Parts have many spares but as yet have not had any off them. As I have stripped an MD1 down just for the crank shaft as it is the same as the MD1B I am left with quite a few spare parts including the piston, rings, head, etc. You may have trouble in finding the parts for the older MD1 as most listings are for the MD1B and above. I will check the measurements of the rings and bore I have but feel sure they are in pretty good shape. Will let you know shortly.. Eric |
