Hi all, I'm a new owner of a 30' 1939 classic woody that carries in her belly a Universal SuperFour that is seized, possibly from seawater intrusion through the exhaust. It's been sitting for at least 18 months. I'm good with engines, but I can't find squat about the engine online, except for it's history. What are the chances of getting parts? If possible I'd like to restore it, and I even have a service manual. The boat originally had a 30hp motor in it, so if this engine is an anchor, should an atomic 4 be able to drop into it's place? I really don't want to swap to a diesel. The previous owner said that it sipped fuel as long as you kept it a few knots below hull speed. |

Seems like the first thing is to take the head off and see what has really happened. If the seawater has entered and has had 18 months to corrode the cylinders and pistons, then I think an engine rebuild is required - sleeve the cylinders and replace pistons and rings at a minimum. Parts are going to be a challenge, but a rebuild can be done. The hardest parts to get are usually tings like manifolds . If yours is n good shape then at least you're at fist base. An experienced engine shop ( read - old guy) is your most likely source of help. With any luck you should be able to find a guy on Vancouver Island that has some experience with old car engines. Rumour has it that old guys with old cars congregate out there. miro |
