What year Richard? Interesting how they're explaining ignitors, universal joints and reversing propellers as though to people who have never heard of them before.
Pretty spindly crank on that Manhattan engine. Bronze and "scraped to a bearing" - a phrase now lost to history?
The 1.5hp "phosphor bronze" AMC motor would make a nice display for the living room! |

In 1896 these were new technologies and at a period when horse transport was the norm and steam and telephones were innovations. Predates domestic electricity and steam turbines as well. Technology spread via trade expositions, newspapers and direct experience.
Today not many modern fitters have the skill to hand scrape a flat surface or a circular bearing shell. In those days this skill was the foundation for building an engine. |
