I am rebuilding a1959 Graymarine Model 116. This is a 6 Cylinder 226cui (Continental) engine. Now I found out that, beside the Pressure Relief Valve in the block, there is another Pressure Relief Valve incorporated in the Oil Pump itself. Both Valves are having about the same parts like piston and spring. I checked the force and travel of the pistons with the result that the valve in the pump starts to open @ 13 psi. The overflow will go thru the hollow shaft of the oil pump into the oil gallery. The valve in the block starts to open @ 35 psi. This overflow goes back to the oil pan. I couldnt find any information in the Graymarine Maintenance Handbook as well as in shop manual of the 226 Continental engine about the In-Pump relief valve. Can anybody explain the job of this valve? Any ideas and opinions would be very welcome. Thanks and regards from Switzerland.
