* Nice looking complete old engine. A date of manufacture by serial numbers is still not an exact science but by my charts its a depression era engine about 1931. Lathrop was most concerned with oiling his engines and kept his mechanical oiling system long after the mid teens when most oilers disappeared with the mixing of the gas and oil in two stroke engines. This engine still has its dual oiler up top and a rather unique plunger oiler at the crankcase also known as a "crank pin disk oiler" a pre lube before starting engine- roll flywheel on compession then back up 1/2 turn putting connecting rod in down position, open petcock- stroke plunger accordingly close petcock-open dual oilers start engine ! with gas oil mix oilers are for show ! * |

I now have this engine and am looking to rejuvenate it as a winter project. It doesn't turn. Can someone suggest how to start freeing it? Victor. I am near Poughkeepsie, NY. |

Remove the exhaust and look at the piston. If it's clean try putting penetrant in the cylinder and turning it. Heat helps but would probably discolor the paint. next I would remove the head and have a look in there, will probably mean a new head gasket at least. If no serious rust it's probably just barn stuck, tap on the piston while trying to turn it. |
