Does anyone know anything about the Stork Motor Company relationship with Defoe Boat & Motor Works? At this time, Defoe was building knock-down (kit) boats, and I presume they had some sort of marketing relationship, but I haven't read anything about the details. Defoe later went on to become a prominent yacht building firm, selling many boats to the new auto barons.

Richard and Scott
My Stork was mfg. in Saginaw,MI, by the Stork Motor Co. Your ad. shows Stork, mfg. by the Defoe Boat and Motor Works in Bay City. Bay City and Saginaw are about 10 miles apart. Any thoughts?

Greetings Keith,

I have not found anything specifically on Stork engines, but you may wish to contact Ron Bloomfield at the Historical Museum of Bay County in Bay City, Michigan about the Defoe connection or Sandy Schwan at the Saginaw County Historical Society about Stork. I can try to dig up a little more about the firm to see if they filed any corporation annual reports. I do know that the company was formed in 1909, and that they employed 6 people in 1910; 11 people in 1915 (including 1 female); and 25 people in 1920. The employment info comes from Michigan Department of Labor Annual Reports at the Library of Michigan. From this you can see that it was never really a large firm, but substantial enough to have kept going for awhile. Context-wise, Defoe and several other companies in the Saginaw River valley were producing "knock-down" or kit boats at the time, including Brooks Boat Manufacturing Company, Pioneer Boat & Pattern Company, and a handful of others. I suspect, but do not know for sure, that Defoe had some sort of marketing arrangement with Stork to provide motors for their boats. After World War I, Defoe went into building much larger yachts and Stork probably went by the wayside around that time. The Defoe company papers are located at the Historical Collections of the Great Lakes in Bowling Green, Ohio. Bob Graham, the archivist there, might be able to provide further information. Good luck!
