Hi
I am trying to do some research on the Brennan Imp. I have some information about the engine basically, and some idea of how it evolved. I would love to know how long it was produced, what changes were made as the engine evolved form 20 hp to 40, where the casting was done, and anything else that someone may know. If you have pictures of them together or apart, I would appreciate it. I know this is probably a lot to ask, but for an engine that I believe was in production for around 30 years, I'm hoping to compile some information to preserve the legacy of this little engine.

I have a Brennan Imp. I'm trying to find some information about the engine, and where I to find parts if possible. I know it was made in Syracuse New York. The factory had a fire I believe in the late 1960's, and closed in the 1970's. I understand that the Imp was made for many years, but I don't know when production started, and when it stopped. My imp came in my 21 foot launch that was bought used in 1917 when it began delivering mail on Skaneateles Lake. Originally the launch had a Barber Brothers single cylinder 2 stroke, but the imp replaced the Barber Brothers engine (I have the Barber Brothers engine)at some point in time. Can someone help with Brennan Imp information. Thank you. |

The Brennan Imp that I have has no carb. Does anyone know what carb will work, and where I might find one? Also, the distributor is rusty. It is an Auto Lite but I can't read the model number. Can anyone help me find a replacement? Thanks. |

Most likely carb would be a 1 inch updraft Zenith.
You should be able to carefully dismantle the distributer and simply clean it up to working condition. The main thing is to get the flyweights that advance the timing to work freely.
It most likely was a 6 volt ignition but you certainly can use a 12 V coil and battery.
I expect that there is a Pertronix solid state ignition kit that does away with the points and capacitor for it.
You can probably get some assistance from Jeff Tittsall at Parry Automotive in Orillia, Ont.
He's the machine shop manager and knows this stuff backwards and forwards. They do work on marine engine like yours. And because they've been in business for decades, they have old stock.
