hi , i was googling /researching and happened upon this helpful site . I have a new project and i am trying to figure out what i have and need..lol.. i recently bought a boat for almost nothing , seemingly good deal (trailer alone is worth 3 times what i paid)the boat is 19' tri-hull (big/heavy)..my registration says it is a 1969 "surfer" ..upon a lil more research it appears to be a johnson before chris craft bought the molds..more research has shown it is a 200 hp buick v-8 , but to my dismay i can NOT find what the Cubic inches are..i have found buick made a 300 CI till '67 ..most of what i can find from '69 says this should be a 350 ?.. but i thought the buick 350 looked more like a big block , maybe buick had some 300's left over and used them for marine applications? the cast i can find says "1378706" ..it has a start issue but i think it's a simple fix , person i bought it from said he used it last yr and put new plugs and cap n rotor in it this yr and it wont start ..i can get to sound like it wants to fire.. a lil pop here and there but it doesnt appear all the plugs are firing .. so i am thinking he didnt set points or put the rotor/cap in right?..or maybe he bought the wrong ones .. he didnt know what the motor was more than " i was told its a buick" ..i got the whole package for 200 bux (with a fish finder) bonus..lol it's in nice shape and it's heavy hull should bode well on lake michigan/superior..i will add a pic of the motor ..thanx , steve-o

Steve, I put the cast number 1378706-Buick in Google and it took me to s0me buick forums. One listed the number you gave as an intake casting number. Another listed 1378708 as a 67 340 2bbl ?? Try searching buickclub.org/Buicktown |

thanx , yeah thats kindve the loop i got into before i decided to ask here..i googled the cast and was more confused..i was frustrated and kinda shocked how i couldnt find an answer to the CI of the engine..lol..seems like an easy thing to find. it's either a 300,340 or maybe a 350 ..but i thought the 350 used a bigger looking block..i'm still betting the starting issue is in the points/cap someplace , though they are brand new. it has a 2 bbl and it's a v-8 , thats as much as i have narrowed it down as well.lol..would be nice to put a 4bbl on it some day assuming i get it running ..lol , i will ask around on the buick club as well, thanx for looking into it for me , it will be figured out ..lol |

wow.. never thought it would be this hard finding what engine matches my cast number .. this is insane..been searching link after link after link for 3 to 4 hrs a day for 4 days already , not any closer .. found a site for my boat and it says it's either a 300 buick or a 307 chevy .. but they stopped the 300 buick in '67 .. my boat is a '69.. and the cast number isnt one that matches a 300 and it's not even close to a chevy number (rips hair out !!) |

I found a Buick forum blurb that said the 350 used a 6 bolt valve cover- yours looks to be a 4 bolt..... |

cool .. that helps with the process of elimination .. i had always assumed the 350 buick was a big block ..so maybe it's a 300 and the title is wrong and it's really a '66-'67..i want to get a tune-up kit with new points and all.. the guy i bought it from said it worked last yr and this yr he put new cap n wires n rotor on it and it doesnt run .. and he said he didnt know what size the motor was..so maybe he bought the wrong parts?.. i dunno .. it's close to firing , hopefully an easy fix |
