Dick Day has this Gillespie and Boynton that we have hauled to shows for a few years as a for sale engine and got no bites. I decided to take it back to Mass with me and make it run. Hopefully now there may be more interest. It is kind of an odd engine. I don't like to use rare as that applies to steak and not so rare stuff on eBay. However that being said this is the only one of these I have seen. Real nice condition fresh water engine. It needed very little to get it to start. Basically set the timer properly and make a new link to go to the timer handle. As you can see there are no crankcase drains and it had quite a bit of oil in both crankcases. I now have no bugs in my yard for a while. Note the rather intricate backfire traps in both the transfer port covers as well as the pistons. In the bottom pic the parts with lots of little holes are the transfer passages in the pistons. Links to a couple of lousy Youtube vids below. Wow that is a beautiful machine, super well preserved. I am a bit too far from you to be a buyer and 10 hp is a bit much for my needs but would it be possible for you to let me know what kind of price tag would be on such a gem? |

* James P. Gillespie bought Watertown Motor Company in 1915 and moved it to Patterson,N.J. Articles in magazines claimed that 4 cycle marine engines would also be available with the two cycles ( I have never seen one)? the tag on the engine above was used in 1915 and into February of 1916 after that the name was changed once again to Gillespie Manufacturing Corporation. I have found a few 1916 ads for this new company but they seemed to disappear shortly thereafter ? The engine above ( also never seen another one )dates 1915 or very early 1916 ? Some high quality pattern and molding work there. The timer quadrant looks like it was pinched from Gray! |
