First remove the dist. cap and crank the engine and see if the points spark. If they do suspect the condenser. Put the secondary coil wire close to a ground and see if it sparks, this takes the rotor out of the mix. With the condenser out there should be continity from the wire to the metal case. Might as well replace anyway. Your coil could still be bad too if it still won't spark.

David, Can you locate a serial number? Look on the engine tag on the the tranny case for it maybe-should begin with a letter and a dash. The Phantom 4-45 is a pretty desirable Gray-was a popular speed engine for smaller runabouts in the 15-16 foot range.FYI; Niagara Marine engines were built in Dunkirk NY for a time.

Hi,
Finally found someone who could help with my 4-45 seems to have been worthwhile, just didn't have the knowledge myself... ended up being the coil (the plug wires were 7mm cut down to the 6mm that was called for...so replaced them as well) I did replace the dist and the rotor ("I" means someone who had the knowledge)

Looking at a Gray Marine Phantom Four 45, engine # D23493.

How do I find the age of the engine?

Thanks

Thank you very much......can I assume that at that age it is 6 volt? Would it be positive ground? Thanks.
