Great Show. Good friends, great weather and gracious host. And a special treat was witnessing J.B. receiving his auction purchase from Maine. Of course you would expect J.B. to have no rest until the engine that had been in storage for years ran. After freeing up stuck ignitor's, correcting ignition timing and figuring out where to set the numerous valves and levers there was smoke. This was accomplished with the help of an oversize starter motor. But on the morning of day two, J.B. was able to start by pulling over with the flywheel. Oh, and the engine is a 8.96 hp Union built in San Francisco. First view of his new Toy

Large starter motor. There was smoke. Starting by hand. Wish I would have had a video camera. |

Keith & Ernie, thanks for the post. I took the aft head off the Union at lunch time, reworked the valves after work. Went back tonight and made a gasket and reassembled it. Good compression on both cylinders now. I re timed the ignitors, noticed an f on the rear eccebntric and an a on the front one, moved them to their proper location. All parts are marked f & a, I assume fore and aft.Fueled it up, set the compression releases, pulled it though to check ignitor timing again and on the second snap I heard a chuff and it was running. Looks like it will be amazingly easy to start. I need to get a fuel tank on it, carb has a narrow range that it will operate in. |
