Emil Westman designed a number of 1 to multi cyl marine engines, built by Enterprise Machine Co, MInn, Minn, 1900??-1920??; some references refer to Emil as an employee, others imply he was the major force of the company. There was also a line of "Heavy Duty Ditching, Dredging and Traction" engines, used in quite large tile laying ditchers/excavators for draining large areas of boggy or swampy land, etc. A July 1911 ad referred to engines of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 cyl from 6 to 125HP, and that may not be "brake HP"; some ads and/or tech magazine mentions describe as vertical engines, implying no horiz types built, despite one ref to a 2 cyl 81/2 x 10. A private company 1918 ad referred to 35HP and 50HP Westman OIL engines (the only oil ref I found), and another ad, with a pic of a 4cyl engine with a man standing alongside, if in correct perspective, indicates the engine would be about 5 feet high by 6-7 feet long... Cursory Googling doesn't really turn up much more than snippets; does anyone here know of any decent writeup of Emil and/or his line of heavy engines?? Any comments appreciated!! Many thxx!! Bud |

Richard: Many thxx for your reply. I had seen the posts here, either by search or finding them on Google, don't recall which. The several Westman ads I found all said gasoline engines, so don't know if the Bay City for sale ad for the Oil engines was a mistake or not. The few tech mentions I found referred to the industrial engines as developing power at low speed, but I didn't find anything on the larger marine engines. It's interesting that the latest item I found, a writeup in a 1921 NZ paper re' swamp drainage work mentioned a new Bucyrus dredge with a 55HP Westman engine that would turn 4000 RPM and had electric start. |
