Hi, I have a MD11C with an MSB gear box that has the friction lining on the cone. The manual calls for a 20 weight oil above 50 degrees. Maybe I should not try to out think the engineers that designed it, but 20 weight seems very light to me especially for the tropics where I am located. Does anyone know if Volvo ever changed the oil specification to a heavier oil. Why would they spec such a thin oil. Input please. |

A little late on this post but I have the same issue with my volvo MD11c (2 cyl) diesel. Living in the tropics I don't think 20 weight oil is thick enough for the high temps here. I switched to Rotella-T 15W 40 diesel oil thinking the 15W would be fine for starting and the 40 would be better protection when running. Would appreciate any advice anyone has on this as I feel unsure and don't want to screw up the engine. Also note reverse gear for this engine is supposed to use same oil as engine. |
