I have a 55' 3hp Evinrude which runs great. However, I cannot use it in good conscience in our local, pristine lakes because of the gas/oil skank which is part of the engine exhaust. It just runs so nasty compared to modern engines. Has anyone ever heard of, or has knowledge of a way to filter some or most of the gas / oil exhaust from these old engines so it does not wind up in the lake? Even if I had to clean out the filter after each trip out it would be worth it to me. |

Does you engine have a dry exhaust? IF yes, then you could pipe the exhaust out into the atmosphere, and simply dump the slightly warmed cooling water over the side. If the cooling water is mixed with the exhaust just after the exhaust port, then you could recover SOME of the oily water in a settling tank. The size of the settling tank will limit how long you run the engine. It is somewhat similar to the oil/steam separators used in some small steam boats. If on the other hand if your engine is an outboard, then I think you are out of luck. miro |

Then don't use it-sell it and buy a modern outboard and quench your guilty conscience. |

Go even greener and get a one lunger and go more slowly and use less gas. Any road run-off go into that lake by the way? Seriously though: it's nice that you care, but one has to keep a sense of proportion I think. Recycle more and make up for it that way? After all, oil is a natural product and nature has ways of dealing with it, at least in warmer waters. Look at the vanishing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. |

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and ideas. This is indeed an outboard, so it sounds pretty much impossible to clean up the exhaust on such an engine. I also appreciate your humor and perspective on using this motor. I am going to dry dock this motor and get myself a nice, quiet little 2hp Honda outboard instead. Thanks... |
