You have a Palmer YT-1. Nice find! |

The vertical spark plug suggests between 1921-1924. The exhaust manifold says post 1924??? |

Goodday again Thanks for the I.D. the YT1 shown under the Palmer heading on this list seems to have only one overhead valve, while mine has two--is it just the angle of the picture ? ? ? Thanks again to Andrew for this forum! "All the best" Larry Healey |

Its the angle. You have a genuine YT-1 with two overhead valves. Can you tell me if there is a petcock low down below the breather valve on the aft Staboard face of the crankcase?? |

OK now we are into 1926 or later. The petcock works as a crankcase oil level indicator. If you get too much oil in the crankcase you will have it coming out the breather valve just above the petcock. You want to make sure the breather valve piston can move up and down with the engine piston motion. They get gunked up and stick and when they do you lose the crankcase vacuum that keeps the oil from coming out the seals. Running the engine at shows with the crankshaft more or less level the front bearing will get enough oil from the splash in the crankcase but in a boat it will starve for oil and that is why the dripper should drip about 6 per minute. In theory over a working day the oil drip would equal the amount consumed by the engine. My experience is it tends to build up in the crankcase so check the level with the engine stopped to see if you need to drain off a little. YT-1 are great engines and the run counterclockwise facing the balance wheel. Don't crank your guts out trying to make it run clock wise. There should be a ball thrust bearing on the shaft aft of the crankcase forward of the prop shaft coupling. |

By the way the vertical spark plug says 1924 or later. Why I suggested it meant 1921-24 is beyond me. Probably too much draft or maybe its the age group. I am surprised Ernie didn't nail me to the yardarm for such obvious nonsense. |

Goodday again I would be interested in trading this engine on a Canadian made engine --stationary or marine--prefer a four cycle --or also interested in Bi Polar dymamos or motors and early arc lights as used as steet & factory lighting! Larry Healey [email protected] |

Not me! I sure can't argue with Mr Dick "Palmer" Day's knowledge of Palmer history. |
