Hi all, I've got a SABB 10G powered fishing boat but it's using lots of oil (1 Litre every 6 Mile trip) also when you rev it hard it's smoking alot. My dad seems to think that the liner and rings need replacing even though theres lots compression and its starts easily. I've had to strip down and rebuild the engine but did not replace any parts, just removed the exsiting liner and piston, cleared the water lining and then put back it all back together. Any ideas and help would be greatly appricated as the cost of a new liner and set of rings is close to 400 (Sleeman & hawkins), which I would rather not buy unless sure it would help. Cheers Paul |

You need to separate the piston rings from the valve guides. Let the engine sit for a week . Get a hold of a diesel compression gage, hook it up to the glow plug port. Have the battery fully charged and on shore power. crank for a maybe 30 seconds- must be upwards of 300 RPM. I think new 2H are about 426 psi. I overhauled mine at about 330 PSI. Then flood the cylinder with 30 weight oil and see if the compression improves. No improvement means a valve job, Other wise it is a ring problem. Your engine starts easy because the oil in the chamber is helping seal the rings. |
