Greetings all. I've just become the new owner of a fibreglass/timber launch complete with what seems to be a Clae F6 with a simplex head. It is free to turn & does seem to have some compression. Any, and I do mean any, info on what I've come across would be appreciated, starting procedure, clutch, fuel mix etc. Also, am I wasting my time with it as a reliable day to day engine. Thanks in advance, Greg. |

Greg, The F6 are good engines and perfectly reliable. I've had a couple as well as an F10 and they start easily and run well. Just choke it, pull the flywheel over and it should start pretty much straight away providing it has an impulse magneto. Don't use methanol blended fuel.Your probably safest with premium. The only issue you may have is the exhaust valve sticking open after sitting for a while. You can either take off the inspection plate or use a bent tent peg through the spark plug hole to re-seat it. Cheers, Mark S. |

Greg I am sending you some instructions for 6hp which i believe could very well be your F6 engine - I myself am also within this site with a Clae Bantam. I have instructions also for the Clae Bantam engines. Bill |

This engine raises a question or two. Because CLAE and Hardman & Hall were competing firms, it isn't likely that they collaborated. So, how is it that the Simplex head will fit a CLAE? The only answer I can come up with, apart from coincidence, is that they both copied the design of another engine. The CLAE head was deeper than the Simplex, hence the excess stud length. All very curious. Eric |

Hi Eric, They actually don't quite fit as the stud pattern is slightly different. So it's necessary to drill the head to suit one or the other. Simplex will/did supply CLAE single heads with the correct drilling but and as far as I know they always ground the Simplex off the casting. Perhaps somebody obtained a raw casting and drilled it themselves? Cheers, Mark S. |

Thank you Greg. On the bottom of the specification page it gives the address of Clae at Balmain with a telephone number of WB 1441. Research shows that Clae was at 6 School Street Balmain from 1940 to 1950. The specification sheet I do believe along with information about my Clae Bantam came from"Cappers Motors" Distributors for Newcastle District. Bill |
