This engine belongs to a friend of mine who needs help identifying it. His father had and he inherited it about 40 years ago. It still runs and an old friend of his said it was some type of marine engine. engine photo 1

Thank you for your quick response. The owner mentioned that when he was a kid he remembered using it for dethatching also. Does this mean it isn't a marine engine?

I don't think its a lauson aircooled, its got exposed rockers. A true aircooled inboard boat motor will have a oversize oilpan so the engine will run when mounted up to a 15 degree angle. Sometimes the oil pump pickup tube had to be extended. Sometimes the pan is designed tobe wider for engine stringer mounting. Alot of marine carburetors would have to be mounted in a manner to be on the level with the engine mounted at 15 degrees in the boat. Plus the engine should have some kind of thrust bearing as not to push the crankshaft thru the front of the block. good luck with ur i d.

I think we have identified it as a Lauson model UAS. Thanks for all your help and I look forward to learning more about this engine if anyone else has info. I looked at the lauson engine website with a video of this style of engine running.

They were used for industrial equipment, But who knows what else they were used for. I was certain it is a lauson, Mine has open exposed rocker arms also. Mine is missing the carburetor.
It had a model T carb on it when I bought it
