Greetings,
I have a Graymarine 162 cubic inch four-cylinder engine with a Warner hydraulic transmission. Total weight is something like 550 lbs. There are no lifting eyes or brackets on the block.
Is it kosher to thread lifting eyes onto a couple of head studs? There are half a dozen that are long enough to do that. Or alternatively, use several head studs at each end of the engine to mount angle plates with integral lifting rings? The studs are new, ARP brand 3/8" fine thread head studs. Can't remember what the psi rating is, but they're high-strength steel.
What makes me hesitant is that the pull would be along the length of the stud, which means the weight would all be hanging from the threads.
Any thoughts?

Depending on where you are, see if you can find some forged steel lifting nuts with a 3/8 fine thread. Make sure they have a wide flat bottom.
The average tensile strength of a Grade 5 steel bolt is appro. 8,000 lbs. so if you put one an each end of the engine your should be OK. Make sure that the lifting slings are long so that there is only a small part of the stress that is latteraly applied to the eye nuts.
If you are in the US they can be obtained from McMaster-Carr. See this link and note that the lifting rating has a safety factor of 4 or 5 to 1
