Redwing sold at least four Hesselman engines: 4cyl..."4-35"...35HP...probably Wauk XBKH 6cyl..."6-65"...65HP...probably Wauk 6BKH 6cyl..."6-160"...160HP...probably Wauk 6ELH 6cyl..."6-180"...180HP...probably Wauk 6EKH Does anyone have any Redwing literature or manuals which identify by make and model the special spark plugs necessary in Hesselmans, or a late 30's/40's spark plug catalog which lists them?? Or, even better, one of the engines with some spark plugs in it?? I'm trying to work up a list of the plugs available for them in the 30's and 40's; any comments, suggestion appreciated. My 35 book lists those engines but not the sparkplug. Under size of plug is MM most other waukeshaws are 7/8. It lists bosh as the ignition system. The 46 book lists sparkplugs as oridgional equipment, but those engines are not in it anymore. |

Larry: Many thxx for reply.Does either of your plug books have a cross index?? So far the plug models I have are: Champion 40, 41, D-8, D8-CD, DL-8-C and DL-8-CD; Defiance 149 (for Champion 41 and D-8's) and 149-9 (for Champ 40 and DL-8's).These are all 18mm. Bosch DM-20-S-148, reportedly in an export Case tractor, and DM-20-S-149, reportedly in a US Wauk-Hess'mn power unit. None of the online cross-references I've found list any of these. I think Defiance became Blue Crown, but I haven't tried to verify that. Looks like a nice straddle: 35 too early and 46 too late; now all I need is one in the middle--lol!! Many thxx for any addt'l info. Take care. Bud |

The 46 book does have a conversion table, but none of your numbers appear. The defiance numbers seem to match the system used by firestone better than blue crown. Another book lists a modern conversion for champ 41 as champ K97F. |

Larry: Many thanks for additional effort; I did have the cross to the K97F; my apologies for forgetting to mention it. These were highly specialized plugs, and the engines weren't very successful here, so everything dropped out of the catalogs pretty quickly. The Wauk-H Gen'l Inst's say "...there are a number of popular American-made plugs on the market for Hesselman engines..." (meaning besides those they directly recommended) but it sounds more like marketing than truth! Hess'mns were more popular in Europe, and I've got an inquiry in to a good UK source that may turn some up. Again, many thxx for your help. Take care . Bud |
