Purchased 1963 pearson with 453 detroits raritan heads,not shure last time motors ran has been in water for couple years purchased new batteries and after awhile of engaging startor was able too get one too turn not the other,would appreciate any advice on what should do and any precautionay measures should take,not sure about how can lube cylinders first and wondering if anyones encountered any similiar things and did motors run after?

With those engines you need to make sure the injectors and govener rack are not stuck before turning the engines over. Remove the valve cover and manuely push down each injector plunger by hand(i use a hammer handle).Allso move the rack(pipe on the side)if it is stuck or stiff you risk a runaway engine.A stuck injector will stop an engine from turning over.

Stuck injectors are very common in thease engines that sit. Injectors can be loosened by removeing them and soaking in diesel, followed by light tapping with a plastic hammer.

Thanks Larry,the injectors would stop motor from even turning,i didnt start other one but was able too get it too turn hope didnt do any damage just by cranking over some.

The gm engines are a differant animal.The injectors have plungers in them that are pushed just like valves under the valve cover.It is common for them to stick and one can stick down allowing the engine to turn, but hold the fuel metering rack closed or open.With the rack open the engine will quickly overspeed on 3 cylinders. If closed the engine gets no fuel and wont start,so both engines should have the rack checked. As long as a pushrod didn't bend you are likely ok.Make sure you know how the operate the emergency stop valve on air intake of thease engines.There are other reasons an engine can stick, but you should start with the injectors.The gm engines were popular years ago you should be able to find an older guy to work on them.

These 4-53's that have been under water for any time, will have water in the open valve cylinder and will hydrostatic lock up, when you try to turn them over,..but if you hand crank them slowly, they will relief the pressure, when the valves open, or pass by the open ports in the liners and the Injectors probably have water in the fuel system rail pressure passage, that supply fuel to them and rust up the P&B's and stick in the down position, or Up,..so..with a Hand Fuel pressure pump, you can prime/flush out the Injectros and Fuel Rail, with fresh Fuel...I would recommend replacing the Injectors with Rebuilt ones and be sure to replace the Primary and Secondary Fuel Filters. Also the Lube Oil and Filter.

I also forgot to tell you to that I reccomend that you first remove the injectors, before cranking over the 4-53's, to help get rid of the water in the cylinders and prevent the hydrostatic lock up.

thank you,supposedely rebuilt wanna try too run without rebuilding.really thankful for the help and is a great page,honestly guys so helpful and appreciate any other help.

Fuel injector overhaul

I had my 1973 SABB 2H with Bosch injectors overhauled in
Plainville, CT Northeast diesel fuel injection service. I doubt that the cost was more than $50 each.

I love reading these threads- What an education from these old masters!

Yes,..The Rebuilt Injectors usally run between $50.00 to $70.00, with you giving the rebuilder yours to rebuild, or exchange them for Rebuilt ones already.

Normaly i just free them myself and reuse them.Most of the time they are stiff and not really rusted.
