Scott, I appreciate your posting these photos !
Ive been looking at this engine and comparing it to my photo list and I think that this is the first one of these engines (or Photo ) i've ever seen !
In a 1906 American Boating Engine Directory there is a listing for a "Norfolk Motor Company"
in Wollaston, Mass ( Norfolk) county. I have never seen an ad or a photo to link the engine above to this company, but in my Data base of over 1900 mfgrs names this is the only "Norfolk"
entry other than the Norfolk Navy Yard and by looking at all my Navy engs and photos they don't have much in common with Peter Snow's engine ?

Great Rare find and in Great condition !

My eyes read B O S T O N on the lower half of the Fly wheel face. Wollaston being a suburb South of Boston Ma. |

Bruce, You've made my day !
I looked at the Norfolk Engine photos for two days and ran the info through my data base in every way I could to put the Norfolk Motor Co. name to the engine but it left some doubt, your keen eyes I believe has removed that doubt and we have seen an old marine engine for the first time and put a makers name on it , a mfgr that as far as I know has been unmentioned in Max Homfelds,Wendels or Stan Graysons index's and probably in obscurity for many decades !
The three sources mentioned above probably collectivley have 800 plus marine engine mfgrs names,this data base has over 1900 and if we discussed a different engine Company each week here it would take 36 years to get through the list?
Its great fun and thanks for everyones input !

Norfolk Mass is aboiut 20 miles from Wollaston Mass so the name isn't totally out of area. Who knows where the owner/s lived or where money for the company may have come from.
Just 2 cents worth of thinking...

Thanks for all your study on the engine.
There is a story that goes with it.
The motor was my wife's grandfathers. I got it from her uncle who says that her granddad built it. He was interested in becoming a machinest went to New Bedford Tech school. Could he have gotten a rough cast and machined it at school?
There seems to be more written on the fly wheel that I cant decifer. Could have been painted on.
The engine is free. Looking at the piston through exhaust port it looks new. It has run but not much. Slight carbon rubbing my finger in the sparkplug hole

JUST TO ADD A TIDBIT: I USED TO LIVE IN THIS AREA AND THERE IS A COMMERCIAL SECTION OF QUINCY MASS. NEAR WOLLASTON CALLED NORFOLK DOWNS. THE OLD BOSTON GEAR WORKS IS STILL THERE I BELIEVE BUT UNDER A NEW NAME.THEY ARE OR WERE LOCATED IN NORFOLK DOWNS.
THE QUINCY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MIGHT HAVE FURTHER INFO FOR YOU. KEEP ON SLEUTHING! |
