I have a gray marine flathead 6 that I'm trying to identify. Judging by the "A600" cylinder head casting number the displacement is 244 cu in. The engine has a single Zenith carburetor and is supposedly from a 56-57 Correct Craft (model unknown). In the 39-60 maintenance manual I have found the following 244 cu in models: Model 120 Model 136 Lugger Six-244 Lugger Six-91 Express Six-244 Express Six-91 Model 115 Phantom Six-125 Phantom Six-135 Then there are the Fireballs, but as far as I know, none of them were single carb. Can anyone help? |

Martin, There is a small dime sized disc on the carburetor. What numbers are on the disc? |

Jim, the carburetor is off on rebuild. I'll try to get the number from the rebuilder. Thanks for replying. |

Jim, I finally got the carburetor back - a full year later! The numbers on the disk are 10870. What does this tell me? |

Thanks Jim, does this mean that the engine is an Express 6-244 (assuming it's the original carb)? Where did you find the info? Below is a picture of the engine, note the somewhat unusual integral type of exhaust and intake manifold.

Martin, The info came from a Zenith Carburetor manual. The 100hp is 226in. |

Ok, but both the cylinder head and the block are marked with A600A which means it's a 244in right? So I guess they must have switched the carb at some point. Is the carb in your manual a model 63? Any other numbers or such that could be used to id the engine? The block is also marked A18R (or A18P, hard to tell) and the head has a small screw-on plate marked 7 16 53 (possibly 7 18 53). |

10870 is a model 63M2E12 Not real familar on the block numbers. |

The A600a is a contintial number and could be a 226ci allso. The 7 16 53 is likely a build or rebuild date. |

Lawrence, It seems reasonable that the top plate number is the engine build date, it also agrees with the 49-53 manufacturing year range of Jim's carb manual. But the 226ci doesn't make sense. I understand that A600 is a Continental number but all info I've found indicates that A600 means 244ci. Also, the total engine weight including pallet and plywood box is 1090 pounds which seems too much for a 226 (the 226es are typically 700 punds with direct drive). I'm renovating a Swedish mahogany boat from 1938 and I don't want it to end up underpowered - that's the prime reason for why I want to id it. For sure it's not all about hp but a 226ci 100hp is near the limit I'm afraid. Thanks for all help. |

From my 1950 model 100 manual.The model 100 is the only engine listed at 100 hp. it's a 226 ci engine listed in the high speed engine list among the phantom models. The medium and heavy duty list show the Lugger and the Express models. the six-226 lugger is rated at73 hp at 2400 rpm.the six244 lugger is rated at 83hp at 2400 rpm.the express six-226 is rated at 93 hp at3200 rpm. the six244 express in rated at 102 hp at 3200 rpm. the six 244 weighs 100 pounds more than the six226 weighing in at 825 with direct drive tranny.the model 100 is 226 ci and weighs 650 pounds.the 226 ci and the 244 ci use the same zenith 63m2e12 carby body. the model 100 uses the 10870 rather than the 9254 designated for the 226 ci six. |

The 226 and 244 use the same block basicly with the same casting marks. When the engines are built differant size pistons are installed to make the differant engines.There should be a stamped number on the block(not head)that shows what it was built as. |

Thanks for the info Bruce, I have the same hp and weight numbers in my manual, which is why I feel 244ci is a better match weight-wise. Are you saying the Express 6-244 uses a carb with serial no 9254 and that this is also a 63m2e12 (like the 10870)? What about the Express 6-244? Lawrence, I'll look for more numbers on the block tomorrow. Any idea on what kind of number I'm looking for? Ccresto, you'll probably get more replies if you start a separate thread. |

Today I found a new marking on the block, just below the top it says "6244". So I guess that settles the displacement issue. Since the 10870 Zenith carb is a 93 model, it would seem to me that the specs are equivalent to an Express 6-244. Whether that was the original configuration or not is another question. |

I have a Model 91 (on the tag) Gray Marine engine sitting in my garage (on wood carrier) that I inherited from my late father in law. I cleaned out the garage last week and uncovered the engine. It has what appears to be a gear shift on the starboard side of the engine. Does any one know anything about the engine? The serial number is 09101049 |

The model GM-91 is a flat head four. Only GM-91 appears on the tag, along with the serial number and Aeroceanic Motor Corporation name. Is ther any other place to look for model numbers on the engine? Also, the head is only 6" w. x 15" l. which does appear small. Any help |
