First year for Century hydraulic steering unit- Hydra Power as in photo- this is on a 1954 Century Viking with Gray Phantom 75- with dual steering stations- each with its own hydraulic steering resevior/box rigged with hoses to the rudder arm with anothe hydraulic box. Each box has different controls- one with a hand pump (to add pressure?), and the other a round setting. The steering wheels each can move the rudder backwards and forwards- but don't move in synchronously. Anyway- would like any information/photocopy of some instructions how to use this beast. |

I have the information that you need for the Hydra Power steering. Maintenance and operating instructions, as well as a parts list. I doubt that the parts are still available, but the illustrations might help. The unit shown is a little different that what I have in my '56 Viking, but yours might be the same. It sounds like you are not locking the individual steering wheels in place while you are using the other wheel. There is a locking pin on each steering wheel that allows you to do this. The locking pin is on the round handle. When you center the wheel and turn the handle, a pin will drop into a hole, locking the wheel in place. The wheel that you want to use would be unlocked and the other would be locked. There are instructions for centering each wheel by opening the bypass valve on the hydraulic line. Center each wheel, center the rudder manually, then close the bypass. I was having problems with my steering a number of years ago. I would center the wheels, but as we used the boat, the rudder would start to drift to the right. Eventually, we could only go in tight left hand circles. I took the entire steering system out of the boat and set it up in my shop. The problem turned out to be a 39 cent "o" ring on the plunger. The plunger handle on the reservoir stay in the slightly raised position at all times. Once I got that problem solved, I have found this to be a very nice system. I'm having a problem with my computer not seeing my scanner. If you will email me your address ([email protected]), I will mail you copies of the lit. that I have. Rick |

Thanks Rick- that is outstanding news. I have emailed you my mailing address to allow you to send the information you noted. I really appreciate this- as I am not sure there really are many copies of this information around anymore- much less the instructions, maintenance, operating, and parts list... It sort of defines the character of the whole boat. Gary |

Thanks Rick- received the information and it was absolutely what was needed. I doubt I would have ever figured it out with trial and error. One more question- Hydra Power Hydraulic Fluid is certainly not made anymore- do you know what you used? Power Steering fluid? Thanks Again. |

Hi Henry, I just saw your post from February. I don't look at the misc. posts very often. I'll get that info out to you ASAP on the chance that you still need it. |
