I was very lucky to find a direct replacement Renault RC8D 8hp(6kw) on ebay recently. How lucky? How about brand new in the crate from the factory complete stored 25 years for 600 bucks. Motor pushes a 79 Hunter H27 7500lbs of boat at (3600rpm max load rpm) 6.2 kts in flat conditions. My concern is lack of sulfur in current diesel fuel. Production stopped in the early 80's and is an old design to begin with. This is a ball bearing splash lube engine. The valve seats are machined directly in the cast iron head not inserts. Compression is 19to1 no glow plug. Plus alt. can be switched off..big help. It starts easily by hand and starter. I was surprised at the power and smoothness of this little beast running at speed. Now I want to preserve it best I can. Any input appreciated AND DON'T GIVE UP THE SEARCH FOR THAT RARE FIND. CHEERS FRANK |

This has been talked about on other sites alot.There are lots of additives that claim to be a help.Most are water dispersants and some small lube added.Not all have the added lube.So guys are adding 2cycle oil to the diesel to add lubricty.One once to the gallon or less. |

i have seen people adding automatic transmission oil to the diesel fuel in the construction industry. mostly in older engines that have experienced injector sticking. one cup to 40 gal? |

This is not like unleaded fuel where lead removal caused valve recession concerns, the issue is lack of lubricity for the injection system. As I understand it it is the process that removes the sulphur that also removes the lubricity. In theory the suppliers are supposed to be mixing in an additive to diesel to remedy this, but many myself included do not trust that. Personally in my truck I run a quality additive because you get the other benefits that come with it. 2 stoke oil is widely used and may well be more economical for larger fuel amounts, although it did not rate highly on the test I refence below. ATF in my book is a no no, yeah the old timers used it but things have changed. For starters friction modifiers in the ATF will not be good for the tight tolerance injection system.
