Does anyone know the weight and dimensions of the Chrysler Royal M48 (or M48S) straight 8? I'm thinking of buying one and any info on this engine would be appreciated.

It all depends on the type of reverse gear. The M48 as offered with a 1-1 straight drive through a 9.11-1 double reduction and a V-drive.
Here is the 1-1 info. It might be hard to read but it weighs 1030LBS. A rough One sold at a Portage, IN auction recently for less than $200M-48 blueprint

Thank you Drrot. I was looking at a 2:1 reduction gear which I guess will add a 100 pounds or so. But this gives me a rough idea - great.

What's the general opinion on these engines? As I understand they're smooth runners and very reliable.

They are smooth with good low end torque. Reliability relates to maintenance. One good thing is the internal engine parts are reasonably priced.
