My uncle is a long time diesel mechanic and marine engineer. He is rebuilding an Allis Chalmers Buda 4cyl. marine diesel model 4DAMR182 diesel that had seized up. He has replaced or repaired the fuel lines, fuel pump, injectors, heads, and other parts so now the engine turns properly, fuel flows etc, but it will not start. He wonders if a part called an "aircell" could cause the engine not to run? The diesel is in a former Canadian Navy launch that he converted into a yacht, the diesel just siezed up one day apparently due to wrong fuel, some sort of "organic diesel" (I am not clear exactly what the problem was, he had sold it to a different person who used it for several years without a problem until the engine just seized up one day. Then that fellow hired a mechanic who could not fix it and replaced parts that did not need fixing .) Anyway, my uncle is a very skilled mechanic but this has him completely baffled. He would appreciate if there is someone out there with experience on Buda diesels that he could talk to about this engine and perhaps get some new ideas about how to fix this. |

You could try the discussion board on allis tractors on www.ytmag.com . If the injectors are putting out fuel my guess would be that its a timeing issue. One of the timeing marks is used to install the pump and after its in the mark in the window will be one tooth to the right of the mark. The other 2 marks will be centered. |

Hi we have two 1879 buda's in an old ww2 80 foot motor boat a hdml and we ru on one engine for most of the time We consume about 15 ltrs an hour an do about (8 knots that is running at about 475 rpm we find that it idles at around 380 rpm and has sweet spots at 480. 530 and 630 720 for about 18 ltrs an hour we try not to run it above 800 but in an emergency we ran the one engine for 1/2 hour at 1200 which is way above safe speed but it did not miss a beat in fact it sounded so sweet These engines are wonderful to start and run they have a way of sounding that is quite unique nothing like a modern diesel and quite different to a Gardner the torque is huge and they feel like they will just keep pulling and pulling . |

I need a fresh water pump for an 1879 in an army T-boat. Any suggestions? I have other spare parts to trade if anyone is interested (raw water pumps, starters, etc). |
