My Dad has aquired a Single cylinder diesel engine called a "Coventry". I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it as no one is our Stationary Engine Club has a clue about what it could be from. I dont knwo if it is a marine or not because it is very heavy. but if there is anyone out there that might know something about it, feel free to email me or post a message as i check the boards daily.

It looks to me like the typical 1940/50s diesel used on a lot of dragers, trawlers for refrigeration or electic power rather than propulsion. |

I think it is a Coventry Victor 5 - 7 hp. They were an industrial engine and could be bought with a marine type gearbox. I had one in a small boat in 1975 and it was a nice little thing dating from the early 50s. They used a lot of aluminium in the castings and hence they were relatively light. It needed priming with a spoonful of diesel oil put in a small brass plunger on the top. Decompressor was via a button in the rocker box which was depressed so one could wind it over. Coventry made small engines for driving fire pumps etc. They made a bigger engine called a Coventry Godiva (bit of a pun to Brits) and I think it was the same company that built the Coventry Climax racing engines eventually. |

Hi Aaron. Looks like you have a Coventry Victor WD1 or WD2. There is a link to the Coventry Victor website further down in the list of diesel inboard topics. They have a picture of your engine - or very similar, and may be able to supply you with a manual. Coventry Victor made a vast range of engines, both diesel and petrol but Coventry Climax was a different company. |

Sorry to disagree guys, but it looks like the Coventry Diesel CDU 3 to 5-1/2hp water cooled engine. The horizontal injector, pump position, timing cover shape etc all look identical to the engine drawing in the British Diesel Engine Catalogue 3rd Edition. The Coventry Victor engine is on the next page, and has many differences, the main visual one being the size of the crankcase and mounting feet. HTH Peter |

I have just finished cleaning and painting one of these and can confirm it is different to the Coventry Victor diesels as I have one of those too. Mine varys in that it is radiator cooled, but otherwise looks the same. The name plate beside what I think is the oil pressure valve has "Coventry Diesel Engine CDU /345/1/554" The 1 appears to have been changed from a 5! About the only thing in common with the C.Victor engine is that they both use a prime of lube and fuel Oil mix to increase compression for cold starting, However on the Coventry engine the "primimg cup" just runs into the inlet port, whereas the Coventry Victor has a special valve into the combustion area, and were known to fire the plunger out like a bullet if the engine fired while the valve was open. My Coventry engine seems to be governed to run at 700 rpm, hence the big flywheel. (heavier than the engine)! In "Power Farming in Aust and NZ Technical Annual 1961" the Coventry Victor WD3 (water cooled) are rated at 6 HP @ 1250 rpm to 9 HP @ 2000 rpm, much faster! and their flywheel is a perhaps third to a quarter of the size. I am also looking for more information on this one. ie HP, year etc, I'll have a photo of mine soon. Good luck, Cheers Darryl |

I've got a 1950 4 cylinder Coventry Godiva in my Black Swan motor yacht. I've also got the original handbook for both the engine and the hydraulic transmission. The engine handbook is very detailed. If anyone needs a page copying I'll be more than happy to copy and email |

Hi The engine is a Coventry Diesel Godiva type CDM engine. It's a 2 cylinder, water cooled, marine engine developing 15BHP @ 2000rpm. They were used as water pumps on fire engines. The inbuilt counter-balance mechanism renders this 2 cylinder engine as smooth as a four cylinder. Both pistons rise and descend together, while one piston is on the induction stroke the other is on the combustion stroke. This gives a power stroke for every revolution of the crankshaft and the torque is much more even than other twin cylinder engines of the time. Max torque achieved just over 1400rpm - should be able to push along a narrowboat at low rev. The unit was supplied with a 2:1 reduction marine gearbox. |

I have a Coventry Disel Inc - Godiva Type C.D.M engine. 15HP from 1953. But this is not the engine you are looking for. "Ocean686" is wrinting about my engine, not yours (i think) because the wording is copy pasted from my engine repair manual for my engine... or maby not? I have scanned my engine manual and transmition manual, and provided pictures of my engine here, i hope someone can use what i have scanned: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3863678/Coventry%20Disel%20Godiva%20Type%20CDM%2015HP%2 0-%201953/Coventry%20Disel%20Type%20C.D.M%20Engine%201.pdf And https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3863678/Coventry%20Disel%20Godiva%20Type%20CDM%2015HP%20-%201953/Handbook%20for%20types%20MR%20IIB%20and%20MRFIIB%20-%20Marine%20Gearbox%20-%20Self%20changing%20gears%20LTD%201.pdf And https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3863678/Coventry%20Disel%20Godiva%20Type%20CDM%2015HP%20-%201953/Coventry%20Godiva%20CDM%2015hp%201953.JPG
