Picked up a 1930's Bateau last Friday. It is currently powered by a Cushman C-34, but will be refitted with a 8HP Nadler and a mild restoration. She is 23'X 4'6" beam and 32" bottom.

JB,
No, I don't have a trailer for it yet and am having rotator cuff surgery next Thursday. ..... Doc says I will be down for 3 months, but I plan on making some headway with one arm. It needs sealing and has some small rot issues, but I have always wanted a old Bateau and this one should be a easy project. I plan on getting to my other wood boats after this one. My son wants to Duck hunt next year so, I told him he had to build a pirogue this summer. Looking foward to your camp get together. Maybe the gang can make the shop tours to Houma & see boats and Helicopters. |

Robert,
I am having problems with the OME image resizer, will look for another one. Basically it looks like they just took the clutch off. This boat was a older restoration and I don't think it was ever put in the water as the prop still has the manufacturers sticker on it. The governor is still hooked up and no alternate throttle control installed. It will run fairly slow and accelerates fine. The governor could be used or disconnected, either way a throttle control would need to be installed, I don't think they got to that point yet. I will post some pics when able.

I let a year pass and finally got fired up on the Bateau project. I'm not real good about taking progress pictures, but between my phone and camera I have a few.
Got it ready just in time for The Bateaux De Bois Festival in Lockport LA. May 12 2012. It performed flawlessly and a good time was had. |

A poor quality video of the shakedown ride. After a short test run we turned around and took a 15 mile round trip ride from Bourg LA to Lockport LA. It was a great day.

Jim,
It really makes me want to find a Bateau to put my Nadler/LA into, and then ride around the swamps of the upper Mississippi. When I was young, my grandfather rented out wooden fishing boats to locals, and if one of those could have been saved, I would love putting a motor into it. |

It was a lot of fun to finally have a boat in the water. I can't wait til next year, that is going to be a fun show. If you guys have any pics of the boats in the water pease post or send to me. I forgot to take pics as usual.

Bateau's are hard to find, building one may be the easiest option. Hopefully you run across a boat like your Grandfather rented. Maybe you can make the journey down to Louisiana one day and really get the Bateau Bug.

If you could be a little more specific it would help. Couplings can be bought at marine supply houses as well as stuffing boxes and struts. Shafts will have to be made or ordered to fit.

I will install a 5 to 8 hp new air cooled engine in a 12 ft wooden skiff. Yes, I need the box, strut and shaft coupling. Looking for a marine supply that handles this. Thanks |

bdavid, have you or anyone else been able to put together a smallish Briggs type aircooled total inboard system for a small boat ? I have found the
price of small propellers for inboard shafts to be particularly expensive... ie more than $500 dollars ? ? There's got to be a better way. I sure am jealous now of seeing prices on small outboard motors sometimes down in the $50 dollar range. Maybe we need to fashion an inboard propeller strut to have the dimensions and shape of an outboard lower end so we can use an outboard
prop and not pay through the nose for our props. |

These LA boats remind me a little of the New England
Crab Skiffs with the inboard Briggs engines.
