I finally gave up trying to repair my original engine and managed to locate one the same model in good condition (nearly).
I have the manual for this engine and it nominates Bosch spark plug M 45 T 1, anyone know the modern equivalent for this spark plug. Manual also states that the timing should be set from No1 Cyl and says this is the further est from the fly wheel, when I removed the magneto and looked inside the housing there are white paint marks (look original) on the block and gears , when these are lined up, it is TDC of No2 Cyl closest to the flywheel. Anyone know which one is correct?

found this information from this site

http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Plugs/appmar1.htm

Albonco o21 uses a champion 7 plug

and then to this page

http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Plugs/plug.htm

crosses a type 7 to a 18mm with a 1.00 (inch)hex
a .500 (1/2) inch reach and a .018-.020 gap with a medium temp range

here is a conversion chart

http://www.mcoct.com/spark_plug_conversion_charts.htm

with this a champion 7 becomes a champion d16

and then with this site

http://www.championsparkplugs.com/images/champion.jpg

a d16 is a 18mm 1/2 inch reach with a conventional end tip

Here is a site that sells the champion 7

http://www.crcushman.com/catalog/spark.html

Lots of luck bob....

Bob,
Thanks for the info, it looks like Champion D16 or NGK A6 will do the job. I also sent an email to Bosch and they say the Bosch W8AC is the Bosch replacement for the old M45T1.
All i have to now is confirm the correct cyl to set the timing.
Cheers

On the timeing thing if the cylinders hit oppisite each other you can time it to either cylinder and the other will be correct.Just make sure you are on the compression stroke and your rotor and wires point to that cylinder. If the lugs in the mag are 90 degrees not 180 you will need to use the first lug on the first cylinder that hits.

After cleaning the plugs on my new motor, it turns out that they are D16's, cleaned them up and working ok.

Thanks to all for the info and help. Only problem I have now that I was ripped off on my replacement motor, and now back to trying to fix rust in the block through to the manifold. Exactly the same problem I had on my old motor. Unfortunately for me the rust damage to my replacement motor was very well covered up and didn't appear until I had installed the motor and run it for an hour or so. not sure what i will do the old one yet, maybe keep it for parts.

Allan, a good replacment for the Bosch M45T is the Bosch M95T1.

Timing is easily done by turning the magneto approximately at a spark point, and then put one cilinder just after the TDP from the compression stroke. Then check if the spark comes at the right moment, and if not, adjust the magneto in the right direction.
Be aware of having a spark after the BDP, if the timing is to early you risk serious damage on your cranckshaft.
