Hi, I just bought an old boat . The motor says Palmer and the gearbox says Model 25. I can't find any information on line about ths palmer model 25. Where do I begin in checking this engine and getting it started? I assume it is a four stroke but I want to be sure before I try to start it. Help! |

Rick,
You probably have a Palmer BH25. Yes it is a four cycle engine. We sell a manual for the BH25 and the PW27 at this link.

Thank you Andrew for the information. I noticed there was some interest in the color the engine should be. This engine still has the original paint on it. I will sample some chips and post the ICI color and formula for the color or as close to it as I can get after I get the motor out of the boat. I did order the manual and I'm looking forward to a new adventure in operating this antique treasure! |

I just got my boat with the 1956 palmer bh25. The color is green but the info in the book says it should be grey. Am I reading this wrong? Also, the carburator store lists rebuild kits for the series 87 carb. My carb is a 1951 vintage. This site has been very helpful in locating information as well as parts for this engine. I also have some prints from the factory of the engine in action (advertisments) and the paperwork that came with the boat dating it as a kit boat. Just a little peice of history with the boat. If the pictures are of interest I could send copies of them. |

My guess is that Palmer may have run out of Gray in the latter part of 1956 and while in the memory of old time employees they started using green in 1957 it has been my experience with such Palmer data that it needs to be dealt with understanding to say the least. For example we know they often used old photographs that while related to the current engine model the photos were not precisely the same as the engine in the shipping crate. Often when bringine out a new model Raynal Bolling and Hank Watson both told me if it was not totally completed for the boat shows they would fabricate wood parts to look like the finished product.
One also has to keep in mind that the serial number year could be anywhere in the year from January to Dec. We also know that engines such as the ZR-1 went out of production in 1962. In the last years of ZR-1 production engines have turned up with crankcase breather valves that go back to 1920s. I remember one 1957 ZR-1 that Dave Reed had had a such a breather valve. My guess is they were cleaning out the warehouse and simply used up new old stock parts. I wonder what the serial number of Rick's BH-25 is? I would like to add it to the annual listing if Rick agrees. |

Hi Andrew and Richard, I am going to scan the pictures and post them and send them as well. As I was pulling out both the engine and my lower back this morning, I found the factory spec sheet and installation print dated 1952, drawing # 11087 in the hull. It is in pretty good shape. I,m going to have these laminated to preserve them unless there is a better way to keep them. I sent the carb out to have it rebuilt and pulled the head off. The piston and cylinder are in excellent shape. The engine just need a cleaning and paint job. I'm going to match the pale green ans it shows on the flywheel. I e-mailed some pictures to Richard I took of the now named sandworm to show my starting phase. More will follow. The serial number of the Engine is 3631756. Thanks for all your help and i'm sure I'll need mor info as the winter progresses. I will have this done for the Mystic antique boat show and I lookk forward to meeting some of you folks then. Rick |
