Just bought a p-60 powered coronado 28...looking to rebuild or at the very least service the engine. Where is the best place to obtain replacement parts?

thanks

The block and innards are International Harvester. It is the same as an IH C-60 from the FarmAll Cub (NOT cub cadet) tractor.

Many of the external parts like the Carb, thermostat and gauges, are simlar to those on an Atomic 4 - and can be gotten from Moyer Marine.

If it's original, the water pump is a Jabsco, and they still make impellers, shafts, grease cup etc. for it.

The electrical parts can be gotten from NAPA. Spark advance is 0 degrees at idle.

Assuming it's a direct drive motor, with no v-drive or reduction (you can tell - a reduction gear engine will have a left hand prop and a v-drive is obvious). The reverse gear is a Paragon OXB, similar to an Atomic 4, but they generally only need adjusting. It will use the same prop as an Atomic 4. If the prop is original, there are several new and improved versions on the market (Indigo and CDI).

Gaskets To Go makes new copper head gaskets for the P-60. An IH head gasket will NOT work, as the salt water in the cooling jacket will eat it.

The only fly in the ointment is the exhaust manifold, which is NOT replaceable. If it's rotted, you have to have it welded up.

The manual is available: http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/palmer/

It contains full overhaul and rebuild information from IH as well as the original Palmer manual.

If you're in salt water, run the engine at no more than 140 degrees to avoid getting crud deposits in the block. 140 degree thermostats are available from Moyer Marine (Dole Type).

Here are the ignition part numbers. The distributor is different than the tractor engine. Ignition parts can be gotten from auto parts store with these numbers:

dist cap AL-134

rotor AL-150

condenser AL111

points AL4556XP

Spark plugs are 7/8" industrial size plugs. Oil filter element is Fram C235 or equivelant.

Get a tractor manual also. You can get them on this site. Both manuals will help but they are very sketchy, not like automotive manuals.

To avoid any possible confusion the engine is the IHC Cub Lo-Boy C-60. Before spending much money I would suggest you make sure the exhaust manifold is good. The sucess rate in welding salt water iron is limited to a very very few people who know how to deal with the salt problem. I know of two available exhaust manifold which are useable but just remember even those are a crap shoot as far as remaining life. Presure testing of the exhaust manifold water jacket should be limited probably to no more that 40 pounds in my opinion. A good source of engine parts is www.VALU-BILT.com or 1-888-828-3276

I have a fresh water 1974 islander 30 with a Palmer p60.
The previous owner let it freeze with no attempt at winterization. The exhaust manifold freeze plugs were in the bilge, and it appears to have external cracks. It also had copious amounts of water in the oil. I have replaced the oil and we did start the engine for a minute or so, it sounded good.
Does anyone have a manifold to sell?
Could water get in the oil from a cracked manifold, or am I looking at a cracked head / block etc?

The exaust manifold is unique to Palmer and has to either be repaied or gotten from a scrapped Palmer. There is no aftermarket on the exaust manifold and Palmer has been out of business for over 30 years. New cylinder heads are still being made by after market companies for tractor engines and you will have to drill and tap a 1/8" pipe thread hole for the air bleed line if you use one. Engine blocks are the same as the IH tractor but the water pump trim, crankshaft and flywheel are unique to Palmer.

I have a Palmer P60 engine with water in the oil.
Checked compression and they are all even at or around 90 lbs. I had the water pump rebuilt as requested by the mechanic. drained the oil many times, but there is still water in the oil. He checked the exaust manifold and said it was OK.
Any other area's I can check?, or a test. The engine runs good.

If you are operating in a lake or river, you can use a tractor head gasket. If in salt water you will need to have a custom copper head gasket made.

Did the mechanic check the flange connection to the exhaust line to determine if carbon build up in the line at the flange is restricting or blocking discharge cooling water from flowing down the exhaust line???

I've managed to keep my Palmer P60 going for 6 years, through one blown head gasket, which was replaced with a non copper one, and in the process of ordering another, I did get the copper gasket as a spare, which is great since this time, the #1 spark plug seemed to run hot, and suddenly I was getting water in the cylinder heads and on the spark plugs. In the process of attempting to change the plugs and check the head gasket, I discovered that the head itself is cracked near the #1 plug - SO DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A REPLACEMENT HEAD?

Try any CASE/IHC tractor dealer and get a good used head for the CUB LO-BOY C-60 engine.
Try www.VALU-BILT.com or 1-888-828-3276

Steiner Tractor sells new aftermarket cylinder heads for tractor engine C60. To convert to a Palmer you will have to drill and tap a 1/8" pipe thread hole for the fitting for the air bleed line on top of and at the forward end of the cylinder head. If you operate in salt water you will need to get a copper head gasket made

Aw man, that's music to my ears. I really can't imagine anybody trying to rebuild my old corroded one. I guess that's what you get for not using a copper gasket. The next time, I'll for sure use one. But darn, I'll call Steiner Tractor tomorrow first thing.

Please somebody reassure me, that just because my cylinder head on this Palmer P60 was cracked and corroded pretty much through at the #1 spark plug and seems to have gone rather quickly after the engine was running pretty smoothly up until a month ago, and we thought it was just flooding out due to corrosion and rust in the float, that the rest of the engine is probably allright. I'm hoping/praying that just replacing the head will cure the problem, since we were getting water in the #1 cylinder and the #4 cylinder because of the corroded and cracked head. Steiner Tractor offers an aftermarket head that seems identical, and I just can't afford to have the whole boat repowered. One grumpy old mechanic is trying to tell me I'll just be wasting money since the whole engine is likely corroded and shot - but it was running okay up until a few weeks ago?

Palmer went out of business over 35 years ago so he does have a point but he is being overly pessimistic. If it is just the head you could save $10,000 plus by putting on a new head. I wouldn't sink a lot of money into it, say a major overhaul but you might get a few more years out of it if it is just the head. Note that the engine is living on borrowed time and some parts are impossible to get new. For all practical purposes it's an antique. They sure are sweet sounding engines when they are running.

Just buy a used tractor head and save a lot of money. If it were me I would have the head ground which is a simple operation and make sure you put in the air bleed line when you reassemble. If you don't you will lose the head and possibly the block from air/ steam build up in the head forcing the cooling water down the sides of the cylinder. You must use a compressible copper head gasket if you are cooling with salt water otherwise the tractor head gasket works fine.

Bob, when dealing with Palmer engines you will NOT get a reference under Palmer. The rebuild kit is under a Sherwood model number and you will have to know that number or bring the old impeller into a marine store and match it up. Engine parts common to the Internation Harvester tractor (the water pump is NOT common to the tractor) are referenced under IH tractors with a C60 engine. The carburator, thermostat housing and thermostat are common to the Atomic4 engine. Ignition replacement parts, except for the distributor body itself as well as the oil filter element are obtainable from an auto parts store but you will need the part numbers as again their is no reference to Palmer. Those numbers I have

Bob, the pump is a Sherwood E20 which is no longer manufactured. The impeller is a Sherwood 10077K, and the impeller gasket number is 10286. Unless you have water in your oil, you probably don't need to rebuild the pump.

Can somebody tell me if I can increase the size of the water bleed hole at the front of the cylinder head? Conversly, can I replumb so the cooling water flows into the manifold primarily via the front of the head? I have replaced my head twice now; each time it cracks close to the water bleed even though I have verified good flow. Perhaps because the engine is angled somewhat (1950 Dyer Glamour Girl), I am not getting enough flow.
